In NY we have a dep't of the police called autocrime task force, We can call in the serial numbers and verify that they are not stolen before purchasing.

I would guess in Cali you would probably have the same type of thing.

i called the sherffs dept and they told me to call dmv.
i went to dmv and they told me that cant ceck serial numbers.
so i went to chp and they said i had to physically bring in the motor so they can check it out.
but i want to kno b4 i buy they motor. so i got sent around in circles yesterday. so im just gonna get a bill of sale with his info and the motor on it. and my car is already reff'ed for a B18 no sub category like A1, B1, C1 or C5. so i think i should be ok.

Nice, tax dollars at work. I love when you are trying to be legit and do things correctly and it seems like you are still forced to do the wrong thing.
