Default Please Help Me Diag a Grinding Noise.

Here's my issue: When turning left at any speed, there is a grinding noise. It happens with the clutch in or out, while braking or accelerating. The noise is faint at all times but get's real bad when I turn left. It sounds to me like it is coming from the R/FR area. So far I've kind of been throwing parts at it trying to fix it.

I thought it was the R/FR axle and replaced it with a new one. That made zero difference. Also the right front wheel bearing went bad back in october (I had a new one put in) and that noise was completely different from this new noise. The wheel bearing noise was a howling moaning noise that would come and go as I shifted the weight of the car left and right. This new noise is a rubbing/grinding noise that kind of goes whomp whomp while the wheel is turned... even at 1mph. I've had my calipers checked and my rotors resurfaced. That did nothing. I've checked the splash shield to maked sure nothing is rubbing. I hate to say it but, I'm starting to think it may be a bearing in the tranny. Any help on this is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks in advance.

put the car on jackstands, turn the wheels to the left, and spin the wheels. try all the gears and neutral, and see if you can duplicate the problem.

I just had a similar problem and it was because the tranny had the wrong fluid in it. Replaced with correct mtf fluid and it's gone. When turning left or right at low speed it would woom-woom-woom. It would also click a little bit when moving off at start. Good luck.

GM Synchromesh

but...unless there was no fluid in there to begin with, I cant see changing fluid fixing this problem. it would be loud all the time, not just while making a left hand turn and making a rubbing sound.

are you sure it just not your tire on your fender liner

The LSD whining/moaning on low speed turn has been around for a while. Caused by wrong grade oil. Not saying that's it for sure, but it was my problem.

Yeah, I checked that out pretty thoroughly. It makes the noise all the time but it's very subtle until I turn left. Then it get's real loud.

OK. The fluid flush is done and the noise is much better. It's still there but it's like one tenth as loud. I will update as the fluid works it's way in.

Cool. Mine still makes it occassionally as well and that's 6 days after replacing it. Before I could repeat it by turning slowly in a circle and accelerating slightly, but doing that now makes no noise.

It seems to be slightly better each time it sits and then I drive it again. It's already much better. I have to really turn (at around 5mph) sharp left to make the noise now. Hopefully with a little more time, that will go away as well.

I wonder... Does anyone recommend a second flush after a few weeks or so? The synchromesh fluid ran me about $30 for the three qts (It took roughly two and a third). I don't mind spending money but, I really hate WASTING it.
