Default How much of a difference?

I'm converting my 98 automatic Civic EX to manual and was wondering how much I'd be missing out on if I got a DX tranny rather than an EX. I can get a DX VERY cheap at the moment...

If it makes a difference, the plan is to build up my SOHC to run about 10psi daily by next summer. I also plan on purchasing a Hondata Stage 4 if that makes a difference either (I figured maybe all the tuning could offset the shortcomings of the DX trannie's gears or something).

I think that tranny would be good for your plans.

what year DX tranny?

If it is a 96+ tranny, might as well keep you auto tranny.
It sucks that bad!

MISTABONZ i herd your the tranny master here, so im going to not try and tell you that you are wrong and give you my opinion. He is going turbo and im guess that the 96+ tranny is the same as a 96+cx tranny. Now if hes going turbo do you know how long the gears are on the 96+ tranny compared to the shorter gears of the ex tranny. So with longer gears comes shorter turbo lag. That might be better since he is going turbo. I know your the tranny master on here, but please if you think im might be right on this let me know, PEACE.

ps not trying to argue or tell you that you are wrong just wondering if i might be right.

3.72 FD vs 4.25 FD, BIG difference.

Less lag will never overcome mechanical advantage.

The B series folk always raving about the LS trannys for boost. The LS tranny is geared almost IDENTICAL to the Si/EX SOHC tranny. They have more motor to pull the higher gear on top of that!

6g DX/CX tranny tops out 3rd at 118 or so mph. The rpm drop on each shift will drop engine (even if boosted) out of it power band and make it VERY sluggish.

ok well the cx tranny 2nd gear goes to 72 mph and the ex ghoes to 59 or 60 i think, why not have 12 more mph of full boost in a quater mile he would just be in 3rd not long at all he would be in 2nd like 80% of the track, so why not stay in full boost most of the quater mile

Heard this argument before, Wouldnt you rather just want to stay in your powerband the whole time? Even if you get the 12 more MPH your still going to fall out in 3rd. I guess it also depends what your building the car for

with dx u will be falling in and out of vtec with every shift. with ex/si u can still shift a lil before redline and still stay within vtec so u dont hafta struggle to get back into vtec after every shift. i think dx is a waste of time, just stick with the ex/si. with longer gears you might be able to spend more time in boost, but then wont u also spend more time to build ur boost up to max?

Longer gearing isn't always best. I've said this before and I'm sure some of you have heard it. Most people say to get an LS tranny for B series FI motors because of the longer gearing you'd be in boost longer IN THEORY. The actual people that have used that tranny say the longer gears are crap and strongly recommend sticking with the GS-R's shorter gearing.

I agree it would be much better to just stay in the power band with a shorter ratio, but have never heard/seen any results of the longer gears with FI
