Posted this on Club Civic but i need some help and figured i would get more on here.
this is on my 95 DX coupe with stock d 15 engine..
Today my car overheated, pulled it over saw it was leaking and the fan wasn't on. drove it home took everything apart replaced the radiator and thermostat (original ones and car is at 160,000) now i put it all back together, filled her up with antifreeze and started it. looked to be good. took a test drive came back and my entire left side of the engine bay was covered in anti freeze, noticed that the top hose was leaking a little just a few mins ago so im going to put a new hose clamp on because i think the old ones aren't holding very well. but still the fan has yet to come on. I checked the relay and the fuse and they both seem to be intact. tomorrow im going to probably take the fan out and connect it to a direct source to make sure it works. I'm really stumped though. i need this car to be running by tomorrow night to get to work and im also broke as hell right now so i can;t afford any more parts. Do you think the thermostat could be the wrong one? I got it at auto zone and it fit in fine, but it still looks a lot different than the oem one. And also on the test drive the car temp gauge was at normal operating temp like in between 1/4 and 1/2 like always, but the cap on the radiator seemd to be steaming a little but that might have just been more noticable becuase of the cold weather out.

 

What color (if any) is the exhuast? if it's blowing out white, it means your coolant is mixing with your oil.. Along with the fact that your headgasket may be blown...

perhaps you overfilled the overfill tank too much, pressure built, and had to go somewhere (ie.--> engine bay)?

 

no color on the exhaust, i think the head gasket is good but its somethign thats going to be taken care of soon as im plannin on a full mini me swap since the car has so many miles im sure it needs a good head tune up anyway. i think u might be right about the overflow too. still need to know why this fan is not kicking on. i know its temp controlled but i swear that before it would come on pretty quick.

 

i am not sure but is there some kind of fan relay or fuse?

 

already checked them man, fuse is perfect, relay looks fine as well.

yea well i guess what im asking is when is it suposed to kick on. i know its not on all the time.

 

Wait before you dump money into parts you don't even know if they don't work.

It is either your red or green sensor. Most likely the red if you fan doesn't work.

Take two wires and run them from your battery terminals to the fan plug. If the fan kicks on then your fan is good. If not then bad. 99% of the time it is this sensor though, I have replaced about 15 on civics in the last 2 years. It is the most overheating related issue.

Get a manual, find the specs but let the motor warm up to operating temps, unplug sensor plug, hook up to voltmeter checking for ohms (continuity) and cold it should read 5 or so and warm it should read 0.0
