Problems with the clutch... is it time to replace?
Alright, I'm new to the world of civics - I just picked up a '98 EJ Civic about a month ago. I'm also pretty new to the world of cars, so if I sound pretty newb, I apologize.
Everything's stock, and I believe nothing major has been replaced in the last 72k miles.
So, as for the clutch...
The clutch definitely doesn't catch smoothly - lifting my foot off the clutch pedal, it catches almost instantly right as I lift the pedal even slightly. I guess this is just a symptom of a worn and tired clutch, but... shifting from second to third, it loves to make a delicious grinding sound. So, I'm in second, I push the clutch all the way in, I push the stick up into third, and crunch. Bad synchro, I guess.
So, I guess the question is... should I replace the clutch/flywheel?

.Ouch man. The ej clutch is pretty damn durable man. It sounds like a clutch to me. It could be allot of different things, clutch disk, throw out bearing, pressure plate. It could be allot of different things. Dot mess with it man, just get a new clutch kit and have a professional look at it. Clutches are tricky man, so if you don’t know what you’re doing just let some one else put it in.
P.S. get it done soon, because once that syncro is dead it’s gone forever, then you have to buy a new tranny. So save your self-the headache and get it done ASAP

I have a 98 Civic with the D16Y8 engine, and I'm having similar issues with my clutch. I don't have any problems with the transmission as far as I can tell, but my clutch seems weak. It's always been very picky ever since I bought it, and I just assumed it was a characteristic of the Honda clutch. No matter how carefully I release the damn clutch pedal, it will engage very abruptly, as though I dropped the clutch right from the floor. It's difficult to get going from a stop in 1st gear (like I mean without my full concecntration it will buck and chug) and just a little too much gas between gears and I get that embarassing rev down as it evens out...now I've been driving this car for two years and I still can't seem to master the 5-speed. Do you guys think I have a bad clutch?
I just got an Exedy Stage 1 clutch kit on eBay...waiting to get my mechanic to put'er in. What do ya think?
