Wheel Flew OFF
so i found out what the clicking noise was...and it wasnt my cv joints. my entire tire flew off at 60mph...luckily no one hurt but fender got pretty messed up. All 4 lug nuts just flew off which is odd because i tightened them pretty goood....but i guess not good enough. i had it towed to a shop but they are all extremely backed up ....anyone know if i may have messed anything up as far as axel...brakes...things of that nature?
The tire flew off, or the tire and wheel flew off? Maybe people would be able to better advise you if you post a pic. of the damage, otherwise there's no way in hell people can determine what you've broken based on that description.
The tire just flew off of your '97 EX? Which tire?
Were you able to get the car stopped without hitting a curb or anything? Was the problem that you just didn't have the lugnuts tight enough and the clicking noise was the tire moving back and forth as you drove?
And for what it's worth, I'd rather fade away.

the ENTIRE wheel and rim flew off....sorry that i dont have pics...the car is currently at a shop (even though i decided to do it myself). the fender will need to be replaced but i figured id just get a cheap one off ebay (40 bucks shipped) and have it painted from an auto body shop(50 bucks) and then put it on myself. Im guessing ill have to replace the rotor as it was grinding on the pavement for about 20 feet. Didnt hit any curbs or anything but it was scary as hell.
for what its worth i believe someone attempted to steal my rims unsuccessfully and didnt tighten the bolts. so i will invest in locknuts.

I have learned to check my lugnuts after buying tires or anything that requires a shop to remove my wheels. I had purchased some tires, then a day or two later I kept hearing a clicking or rattleing noise. I pulled the little hubcap off, and one of the lugnuts was off, and rattleing around in there. Impact guns are not to be trusted. Maybe the air pressure was low, and the tech didn't notice the impact wasn't putting out the normal torque.

you really cant grasp how scary it is until you've been thru something like this.
i had this happen to me in my 1978 ford f150. back drivers wheel flew off at 55. i thought i was gonna have to change my pants after that. all because someone loosened my lugnuts. ill kill the person if i find em
good luck with the repairs man, and its good to hear there were no injuries.

im in awe but....aside from the fender being messed up....the mechanical damage was...welll...nothing. i had to pay about 100 in maintenance because i had him go over it with a fine tooth and comb and a few lug nuts needed to be replaced....but nothing broke. wierd

they shouldnt be tightening with impact wrenches anyway. they are suppose to hand torque them to spec.
once i got a alignment done at a popular chain of wheel/tire shop based in the northwest and i guess the guy tightened my lugs with a impact wrench and completely stripped 4 of my lug nuts, two from each front wheel. luckily it was less then a week after the work was done and they are 6 blocks away from my house so i was able to drive it there and have my studs replaced for free.

OMG dang the same happened to me to on my driver side wheel i felt it to but i stopped at a store got of and didn't know wtf was wrong so i told my neighbor to watch the car as i drove it slowly and he yelled stop. My wheel was hanging by a lug nut. I replaced the whole set nuts i think someone tried to get my wheels to. But thats crazy how yours flew off that must have been crazy!!!!
WOW!
lke ron white, took his van to sears and one of the wheels "FELL OFF, IT FELL OFF, O F F , IT FELL THE expletive OFF!!!" turhing the van into a tripod.. course that was in the parkin lot.
i bought a torque wrench, i use it a lot, if u have one u should make it a point to check ur torque(s) whenver you check the air pressure

The lug nuts should be torqued when mounted, then checked after (depending whose recommendation you see/follow) 500 or 1000 miles.
The problems I have personally had were caused by improper use of impact wrenches, without hand checking or torquing, by others. Too tight, could not get the wheel with a flat tire off. Once, not tight enough, loosened and clicked couple of blocks down the road.

on the subject about torque wrenches and lugnuts.
If you ever go to a place thats going to take your wheels off, always request, and make sure they do it, that they put the lugnuts on by hand and torque them with a torque wrench to 80 lbs-ft. I do that any time someone else works on my car (not very often), and I always get this weird look. I don't care, I'm not going to have some jack*** mess my stuff up because "thats how they always do it". I even have my girl do the same thing. Last time she took her Jimmy in to have the tires rotated and balanced, they gave her this weird look and then still went to put the lugnuts on with the airgun, she stopped them and made them put them on by hand. I don't care who it is or what shop it is, they never put my lugnuts on with an airgun, it's always by hand.
