my friends car makes a funny noise whenever he goes to start it.

basically, start the car, it sort of chugs and makes an almost grinding chuggin sound,
almost like when you try to start your car when it's already running, but not quite as loud.

it does end up starting after a few moments of "chug"

but definitely disconcerting

any ideas?

 

Sounds like the bendix in the starter is not meshing properly with the flywheel. Could be it is not disengaging.

yeah I told him it sounded like the starter to me...

I mean.. I couldn't think of it being anything else?
electrical problems wouldn't involve any shitty sound like that..

 

my mom's mdx makes that sound when u start it up...pretty sure its the starter or loose belt
