I got a CEL, read it, code 54..CKF sensor.
I reset the ECU and drove to Autozone.
(CEL came back immediately after starting the car)
The OBD reader there read P1336 (intermittent failure of CKF sensor).
I unplugged the sensor and did the tests and it came back ok.
Checked wire continuity all the way back to the ECU, checked for shorts.
It all checked out.
Started the car while monitoring the resistance between the CKF pins on the ECU, we could see the pulses, and see them increase/decrease with RPMS.
So now I'm stuck. It could be the CKF sensor, or it could be the ECU, or it could be some weird wiring problem.
Car sounds and drives fine.
I had already thought I was having some misfire problems in cyl 4 because of the way the spark plug looked, so I swapped the distributor with another one.
I had already swapped plugs and wires.
Any advice on which way to go?
Seems like its about the same amount of money to replace either the sensor or the ECU, but it sure is a big difference in the amount of work.

I would start with replacing the sensor.. it's pretty rare to have the ECU fail, based on my experience..

I had to replace mine, but I had shredded one of the wires for it.. it isn't that hard to replace..

Yeah, I somehow doubt its the ECU too...
Guess I'll be trying to swap this sensor.
How bad is it to drive while the sensor is malfunctioning?

 

i actually tracked mine with it messed up one day (had been throwing a cel for the 2nd o2 being removed so I didn't realize there was another code there).. the car ran fine..

I'm sure it's not the best thing to be doing, but it won't blow it up or anything..

 

Take it this way, OBDI does not have the CKF sensor at all, hence the oil pump housing and lower timing cover being different.

It's just a hall effect sensor, no moving parts... typically not a common failure either.

 

I had the same problem, cept when I pulled the timing cover off my cfk sensor was broken into pieces. You'll be fine driving around without it. Instead of purchasing a new one, if you've got any friends that have an obd1 car running an obd2 motor with an obd1 ecu just grab it from them. A friend of mine happened to have hers in a box of misc parts. She just gave it to me. A whole lot better than spending the $100+ to replace the sensor.
