Default mild cams for my itr

i'm itching for a few more hp and wanted some input on my plans for my 01 itr. mods thus far are: stock intake , mugen header, mugen twinloop exhaust. i would like to add some mild cams to my car and i think ive narrowed it down to toda spec A's. I choose these cams bc i want daily reliability and i see you dont have to upgrade the valvetrain with them. I would also add toda cam gears so they can be tuned properly. my car is right around 75k miles, so i was thinking instead of toda timing belt with these cams, maybe just buy a new OEM timing belt. Would I also need to check or buy a new timing belt tensioner? do these typically fail with new cams? anyone chime in with comments. also if you spot anything i'm in need of like a new intake or something post that up as well. I was even thinking of installing these cams with the help of a friend who is very mechanically inclined. we would have all the tools , lifts, jacks, etc. and we own a helms manual. he has installed his own LSD in a em1 civic, but we want to know if we are out of our league installing cams? we will prob do a pictorial writeup and post here after this too.

TODA As on stock Type-R valvetrain =

Sounds like you're heading in the appropriate direction, nice mild setup, and still reliable. Installing cams should be in your realm if your buddy is mechanically inclined. If you can loosen/tighten/torque bolts properly, and set timing properly, and have a helms manual, I see no reason why you couldn't install these cams without a hitch.

I'd recommend (While you're at it anyway), to go ahead and replace the timing belt, timing belt tensioner, water pump, etc. It's always a good idea to do basic maintenence when upgrading like you are, with the mileage you're at.

Good luck man, keep us posted.

I would also look into some BC3+ they are compatable with a stock valve trane and make good power aswell with stock characteristics at idle and so forth.
I would also look into a stand alone unit to help with the tunning of the cams.
as far as cam gears, I really wouldnt worry about most will just elave them at zero anyways.
and as stated before replace TB, water pump, and tensioner.

thanks for the positive replies. as gfightkill stated , " nice mild setup and still reliable" that basically sums up my whole intention with the car. itrracer121 has also brought up a good question, will i even need adj. cam gears? ive never seen an instruction manual for toda cams, but i would bank on them saying in their paper work to also set them on zero and go see a tuner. i also saw that no one thought i should get an intake, is that bc the stock one is fine for a mild build? also, i will replace all the other routine maintenance parts that you recommended. i guess i need to hit up Len for some parts now.

Stock intake will work fine, but I'd definately recommend upgrading if you have the money. Most aftermarket intakes yeild pretty close power gains, but the best intake you can go with, is the Mugen unit... If it's worth the money to you, it's a great piece.

As previously stated, I'd look into fuel management of somekind. For a mild setup, even a V-AFC/II will do. But I'd find a local tuner, find out what they use, and buy that to tune with.

Good luck with it man, keep us posted.

Ahaha, you said your stock intake is a modification. Gave me a good chuckle.

I would fair to say that most mild cams are good enough at zero as others have stated. Though if you ever wanted to squeeze them for more juice, cam gears would be needed. I'd recommend ST Corsa if you can find a pair.

Don't forget to tune. The stock ECU will not utilize these parts properly.

If you are spending the money and effort on installing cams then why throw away their potential by NOT getting cam gears to have it properly tuned? If you need to cheap out on that area then you aren't ready for cams IMO.

And yes I'd change everything timing belt related why you are in there. It's cheap insurance.

I'd also look into the older Skunk Stage 1 cams.

Obviously with a Mugen header and exhaust and buying Toda cams you dont deliver pizzas for a living so get a Mugen intake and stick with the Mugen baller status, plus that is one badass intake. You would be amazed at how much extra power a good intake will free up or make your other mods more effective.

Has anyone ever tried Toda A's with oem camgears? I wonder if they will make anymore power over the OEM cams at all.

Todd asks a good question, esp if we're just going to leave the adj. cam gears at zero. i'd like to know. i also did some more searching and found skunk2 stage 1 cams offer a few more hp over stock and work well on stock valvetrain. It seems the toda spec A2's which is what theyre called now are a tad more aggressive than the old A's and require at minimum toda valve springs. I'm wondering if a car with mild cams still passes emissions? any truth in that?

Why not first max out what the stock cams can give you?
they can do 190-195 whp if you have the parts to compliment they way they work.
