Default Popping noise on launch

So I was sitting alone at a traffic light this evening when I figured I might test out a 3.5k launch. It was a slight uphill incline and the road was damp. I turned off VSA and as I was taking off I got some wheen spin as well as a lurch/popping noise. It startled me as it sounded vaguely like a rock had hit my car or something -- I could definitely feel it. I didn't notice any erratic behavior from my car afterwards, but it worried me a bit.

Normal? Bad?

the sound was very similar to the sound a rock hitting my car, like a "thud." It was toward the beginning/during my tires stuttering.

Exactly why I said it. Maybe the OP doesnt know what I meant by wheel hop.

Wheel hop is the stuttering of the tires grabbing and losing traction on a quick start. The "hop" can feel and sound very violent.

I know exaclty what your talking about! it happens to my stock Si every time i launch. Its like a quick huge thud from under the hood somewhere. It does sound like a big rock. I dont know what it is? i hope its normal or something, i really dint want to run into another problem with this car.

Try reading what has been posted in this thread already.

The noise you're hearing is wheel hop... sometimes its just one loud thud, other times its a few thuds... it can also happen when you've got the RPM high and you hit the next gear. Either way its nothing to be worried about, and can be remedied by altering your driving

in my past expierence i'd always thought it was the clutch engaging hard. like when you pop it from the floor.

OP: try to "feather" the clutch a bit and most likely you wont hear that thud. but i myself still hear it because i got my Hbrace under there.

Thanks guys. I wondered if that might be it, but I had no idea it'd sound so nasty!

Would better tires clear this up or would the extra traction make it even nastier when it happens?

I would say the tires would help, but also a stiffer suspension with less play might help as well to keep the tires planted on the ground.

Most likely the LSD.

I know what wheel hop is, and I know the noise. There is a difference between the LSD popping, and wheel hop.

If it's just a single pop noise, it's LSD.

If it's multiple, it's most likely just wheel hop.

So LSD does make a noise? because all i hear is a single pop and thats when i shift hard.

Absolutely LSDs make noise. The type in the Si is one of the quietest, but if you ever get a chance, ride in a car with a clutch type LSD, it is a veritable popping symphony.

Is it bad? Or does it just mean it's working?

I have never heard or read anything that says it is bad, but I am not positive. I would guess Honda has designed it with hard launches in mind.

I use to have an LSD on my CRX and when you turned really hard and floored , that thing make alls kinds of racket until you straightened it out. My FG2 is much quieter.
