oil pump going?
My car seems to be running great. Just replaced the timing belt and water pump. The problem that I am having is a rattle that sounds like it is coming from the head right around or above 3Krpm. A few people that I had look at it thought it might be from the timing belt, but the belt is new and tight with minimal flexing. It sounds like valves, but the noise isn't there all the time... only at 3K.
Thanks for the help
BTW: it's a 90 HF

ok. Checked the tensioner today. it looked great. it wasn't rough to turn, and if there was any side-to-side or tiping play, it was near negligable. I'm running out of thoughts other than an oil pump... any other thoughs?
Hey i got a rattle kinda noise at 2-2.3k I still havent found out what it is......I think it might just be my exhaust rattling because sometimes it wont do it for a couple days but it does it most of the time......I know this didnt really help but maybe we got the same prob...

What do you mean by the balancer? Are you talking about the crank pulley? I also have some more news to update on this. My oil pump is working fine. I just installed an oil pressure gague, and I'm running (on average before the engine is warmed up) 70-80psi. I've also disconnected the alt (no change). and checked for play/movement in most of the metal or other attachments to the engine. At this point, the only things that I can come up with are rod bearings or valves hitting the pistons... Anyone know how much off your timing can be before the valves hit?
As far as I can tell, it isn't really a ticking... It might be considered a knock. It's very loud and it does sound like a knock/rattle not quite sure... I could try to record it and post it as a wav file if that might help...(post the location of it on a server at least...)
It probably is not the pistons hitting the valves. The cam timing has to be pretty far off for that to happen. If your cam timing is off at all you will be getting a check engine light and an ECU error code.
I also decided to do a compression test... Here's the results...
#1 200
#2 100 (120 after a few drops of oil) This one has also had a oil fouled plug earlier
#3 205
#4 190
I'll try to get that link to a sound file up later tonight...
BTW: Thanks for all the help and comments on this. it's very much appriciated.

what is your ignition timing set at? What grade gas are you using? Maybe your just knocking because your timing is too far advanced and you use the 89 octane gas.
@ WOT I knock @ 20 BTC w/ 89 octane, bump that up to 91 (the best I can get in Cali
) and I get no more knocking and it feels a lot more power if that means anything.

First of all, I know my timing is a ways off. How far I can't tell... I'm needing to re-time it (I think the belt is off a tooth or two). I have been using the cheapest fuel... 87 I think... Before replacing the belt, I put in 91/92 just to see if it would go away... No change.

as far as I know, I just have a solid metal pully... No rubber anywhere, just metal. You sure about the valves not hitting on a D motor? I was told that it is an interference engine.
