what type of codes would go on and off. I drive the car and the check engine comes on every once and a while. When it does come on, the car begins to idle really low but that's it. I;m trying to figure it out without pulling the code. any ideas.
again: It only goes on sometimes.
for example when i drive up a hill.
it doesnt' come on all the time.
when i shut the car down, and restart most of the time it's off.

 

pulling the code will save you a lot of headache in the long run. you should have a service conector under the glovebox. just jump it with a piece of wire and count the short and long blinks of the check engine light to get a code.

for ex. long long short short short is code 23

long short short is code 12 etc

 

lol you can do it without the computer hook up?

any ideas what it is, i've never really seen something like this.

That's right, all you need is a piece of wire or a paperclip.
i'll explain it a bit better
1. find the two pin (blue) connector behind your glovebox near the passenger door
2. (with the ignition off) short the two pins
3. sit back in the drivers seat and turn the ignition on. count the blinks as described above
