how to identify transmison?
how can i identify what kind of transmision i have? its a b series but iam not to sure that the guy i bought it off of knew what he had! is there any stamps on the trannys?its a hydro tranny! any info will help please
Newer trans like the S4C have a green tag riveted to the housing.
Both the S4C and the Y21 I had for my B16 behaved like the following:
2nd gear 60mph@8000RPM
3rd gear 85mph@8000RPM
Hope this helps. If you get a higher mph number but have a lower RPM, then you probably have an S80.

Tell me the first 6 characters of the VIN (i.e. "JHMDC4" or "1HGEM1") and I can tell you which car it came from.

No.

A GSR VIN would start with "JH4DC238" or "JH4DC239" for 3dr, or "JH4DB858" or "JH4DB859" for 4dr, but keep in mind that only '96-01 USDM transmissions have VIN tags. JDM transmissions and '94-95 Integra transmissions don't have VIN tags.

Depends on how much power you're making, but generally the GSR or the B16/ITR transmission is better for the majority of applications.

How would this help him?
Blow your motor to hell to find out what kind of transmission you have. Theres an idea!
See what kind of car the transmission came out of by the VIN on the transmission.

Re-read my post and it's obvious. If you don't read that well, have someone else explain it to you.

While I agree that just looking at the VIN is the correct way to go, 8000rpm in a B16 isn't going to blow anything to hell unless it's in dire need of maintenance.
