Default CEL question

ok i tried a search on this but really didnt know how to phrase it either. I have a 92 hatch with a 99 b16a2 engine and a p72 ecu... I just got the car last week and want to figure it out. My question is... is it a common thing to have a CEL and SRS light on at all times? They both stay lit at all times, the owner told me that its because of the swap but that doesn't seem right to me. Also i have a switch hanging off the ecu that the old owner told me its a reset button for when the car isnt running right! I know im no honda genius but is this usual?

not normal.....
Check the cel (problem could be from running a p72 for a b16...)
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread/1171263

Have a trained SRS mechanic check the airbag system. Some people will say "reset it" but I wouldnt mess around with something like that...
Factory steering wheel and passenger airbags still in place?

Remove that retarded switch near the ecu, rewire it accordingly and correcly. Its probably there as an ecu reset switch (un-grounding) because the last owner had so many issues.
Once you have fixed the cel issues, the car should run fine.
Also, look into getting a p30 ecu...instead of that p72

vtec (no H)
I would remove it...and sell it. Theres no real need for it.
Messing around with vtec activation point, without proper tuning, can result in problems (more than just decreased performance).
Think of it this way, Honda put vtec where it is (in rpm) for a reason - it works best there.

do you know what the cel is? i know that a p72 would be looking for your secondary butterflies, so if you have them youll throw a cel.

everything else i've got no idea

not yet plan on finding them out this weekend... i just wanted to see if it was even worth looking considering the ecu (i thought anyway) didnt belong to that motor.

Just an fyi, about vtec

I would check the cel first. As said, its probably the code for 2ndary butterflies, specific to the gsr and p72. If that is the case, I would start looking for a p30 ecu OR a p28 with p30/b16 maps (the latter will be more expensive, but a lot easier to find). If you end up replacing the p72, you can obviously use it as leverage toward what you need instead.
You could be throwing multiple codes, too...

The SRS light, is due to removal of the factory steering wheel - the brain is looking for it and not finding it..hence, the light, letting you know its upset.
I do not know if this will negate the passenger side bag from working... If I were you, Id do a little research into that.
Best thing you can do, if you either dont care, or dont come up with anything, is remove the SRS light, within the cluster. Thats really all you can do, aside from finding some jumper for an SRS harness connector (they do exist, I beleive) OR replacing the factory wheel and airbag.
Since there is no bag to explode at random (at you, the driver), I would just ignore it for now.

do u know if the jdm steering wheel will work for this problem.... also after talking to the kid that owened this car, he now thinks that the motor might have a gsr head on it and thats why he used that ecu. Is there a way to tell what head is on there? Thanx for all the information

Im not sure about a jdm airbag/wheel solving the srs problem - I would assume that it would, but I cant say either way for sure.

There is a stamp, on the front of the head, above the exhaust ports. If its b16 it will be "pr3".
What you really care about, is the intake manifold...
Does your intake manifold look like:

(92HB_HB)
OR

(ej1_lsvtec)

The first, is a gsr manifold, which has the 2ndary butterflies
The second, is a b16 manifold, which does not have the butterflies.

22 can be several different things.
How is your oil level?
Solenoid ok? (Solenoid is located on the distributor side of the head, toward the front)

Be sure its screen clean too!

I found this on another board:
<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">On the VTEC pressure sensor, there are 2 wires, one signal, one ground, makes sure the ground is grounded good. if it is the stock harness, take off the plug for the sensor and look inside the sensor. make sure the 2 pins are not bent. It they are you have to buy a new sensor, or a good used one. </TD></TR></TABLE>

Also...
Apparently, the p72 ecu needs vtec to be grounded to the ecu:

yeah i definately dont think i have that peice but it was dark ill look tomorrow in the light. I was lookin through thr car at the wiring and its a mess. Im thinkin on gettin a used harness and when it warms up change it out and get a p30 ecu. i also found a few wires broken off the harness could be some problems. Also figured out what the switch is for, it seems to enable the car to throw the codes with out jumping the plugs.

best thing to do in a situation like this is get a good repair manual for the chassis and the book for the engine,. along with a pack of smokes, and a beer. and just got wire for wire and see whats what. it seems like the person did a real hack job on the swap, and personally, i would give the car your own 150 point inspection before you go trusting your life to it.

wiring is one of the easiest things to get done correctly on a swap, if thats messed up, who knows what else is ghetto rigged.

Yeah i woke up yesterday morning and started on my wiring crusade. I bought a pack of smokes and a coffee and froze my but off. I pulled the engine harness apart to remove the 10 rolls of red electrical tape the kid wrapped around it. Also pulled all the wiring for the 10 ricer gauges out and monster tach. Im gonna call the junk yard for a used dash out of a integra. Also found out why the CEL lights where on. He never hooked the safc to the vtec signal to go back to the ecu and some other thingds aswell. I figured i would rip it all out clean it up and install the things that i want in it my way and know they are done to my approval. that kids ears must have been bleeding yesterday i cursed him all day long. When i looked at the car i knew it needed work but not like this. Also it did have the vtech solenoid, it was dark so i really didnt see it that well.

Later
Sorry for the book
