If you have a defective/fubared/defunct/broken ECU:

Will the car idle at all? Or hell, will the car even turn on? What are some telltale symptoms?


OKAY, we figured it out, it was his car. The ecu was reading just fine. We tested his car with another fresh p28 and it gave off the same code.

I've had a few that just wouldnt rev out past like 3500 rpm and another one that caused a misfire because it shorted the signal to the injector

 

I think usually if an ecu is bad/defective it will run in limp mode with a solid cel.

putting one symptom on a defective ECU is like placing one symptom on a defective car. There are too many little things that can be wrong to put one result to it.

Commonly if the ECU has a bad chip job it will have a solid CEL and a revlimiter of 3500 but idle will be ok.
If you suspect the ECU try a different one.
If you can't do that simply pull off the cover and take a smell, it will smell really foul if something is blown.
But even if it doesn't smell that's doesn't mean that it's good.
