Default 2000 CR-V 104,000 miles died on wife

Hello,

The wife calls me at work and saids that her CR-V died on her. Of course; I was trading it in next week on a new 07 for her. The battery was original so I tried the easy thing first and replaced it but it still will not turn over. She related that the oil light then the battery light came on and she lost all power. Is there a way that I can tell if it's the timing belt? It was a cold night but it stared fine in the morning and then when she got into it around 1100 hours, this occurred. What things should I do before towing it to Honda? The gauge shows 1/4 tank of gas. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

like the engine won't even spin when you try to start it?
And the OIL light was on?
Sounds like the motor is locked up

Thanks

wow thats crazy......best bet would be to take off the valve cover and take a look at the timing belt..if its good then do a compression test.

hmm if it all of a sudden died i would question the timing belt. I have family up in that area actually. If it is the timing belt I would be willing to buy it from you

I don't think it is the timing belt. That was my first concern when she called but it doesn't sound as though it's spinning any easier than before. I talked with the tech at North Honda and they think that it maybe the ignition switch.

Does anyone have the electric schematics for a 2000 CRV? Thanks

My wife had a remote starter put on and when I went to change the ignition switch they had spliced into many of the wires. I followed them as much as I could and it appeared if I just disconnected the original one I could just screw in the new one and plug the two ends in. After getting the new one in, I tried to start it but now the key will not even turn. Is there some type of lock or something that they had spliced into and I just didn't see it or what could possibly causing the ignition to be locked? I jigged the wheel and all that stupid stuff but it seemed to be locked.
Thanks for all your help Ross

did you check to see if the car has oil and water, check the fuses, also did you check to see if the plug wires a fireing to check pull the wire off and the chrank the engine over with the wires end close the the chassis the that is can ground you should hear a poping/ticking kind of sound if is sparking check them all if no spark the take off the distributer cap and check for buildup that could stop the spark if it looks good the it would be a good idea to take it in trouble shoting past that i would leave to a pro

Yes I am! I would have thought that the Honda Techs would have told me I needed a different key!

Is this an issue, I would not have thought that it was.....

What they sold me had two screws surrounding a round plastic piece that attached to the bottom of the ignition. there were two wrapped wires with standard plugs on the ends. The unit had attached onto the bottom of the ignition. It was not the keyed column of the ignition but a piece that attached to the bottom of that.
Thanks for all your help, I tried the things that I could do, of course I'm going to make sure it has gas and not a broken gauge before I get it towed into Honda.
I'll let you know what the final word is.

ok so you just replaced the electrical side of the ignition switch. I can't fathom why you can't turn the key...
Be sure the steering wheel isn't locked. Try to wiggle it while you turn the key.

I was wondering if there is something electrical that could be locking it? They had spliced into most of the wires coming off the ignition switch for the remote starter. I'm just going to reattach the old one and have it towed and let it be someone else headache.

I just like to solve this type of things myself, but being that my 02 Si just went into the bodyshop because of a hit and run, we're down to one car for three working people I don't have the luxury of trying to figure it out myself and work 50 hours a week.

Thank you everyone for helping out

ok i'm confused. did you replace the electrical side of the ignition switch or just repair the wiring?
There is nothing that would prevent the key from turning except the steering wheel being locked. There is a lockout for removing the key but not to turn the car on

I had replaced the electrical side, and I had taken it off and it unlocked. I then put the new one back on and cranked over but still won't start. I sprayed carb cleaner in the throttle body and still will not start. I'm having it towed to Honda tomorrow and I know it will be something easy and stupid!

Thanks again for the help and I'll let you know how it ended up.

You should be a betting man

The coil did take a dump, the sparks plug were on their last leg and coil was working overtime. I should have changed them in the fall and not waited to change them in the spring
Thanks again for all your help
