Default MAP, IAC and TPS

out of these 3, if not working properly, which one would make the car not idle and die?

The car is a 1998 Prelude. 5spd california emissions.

Thanks.

just buy one out of the classifieds or something. You can usually find them pretty easily. All you need is one from any h22.

you won't find them on any honda parts site bc they do not sell them seperate. but as roller said they are easy to change you just have to grind some bolt heads off to remove it.

I vote Map sensor though, it should be the only one that would cause it not to idle and die.

hmmmm

im trying to figure out....when the engine is cold...does the IAC control the idle or does the Fast Idle Thermo Valve control it?

I'm guessing the Fast idle thermo valve controls the idle when the engine is cold... so than would the IAC cause the engine to stall also if it's bad?

can you keep it running by giving it gas? if so then it could be the IACV

yes when the engine is cold the fast idle thermo valve controls the idle. I forget what temperature the fast idle thermo valve stops controlling it. But u can hear when the engine drops down to normal idle

Yes I can keep it running as long as I give it some gas. Only time it dies on me is if I let go of the gas pedal and let the RPMs lower down.

I'd say thats it then, either the fast idle or IACV. Have you tried cleaning the IACV?

Well I have adjusted the idle screw but it was doing the same thing prior to this....

I will return the idle screw to it's previous position and see what will happen.

What is wierd I did touch any of these components....only thing I messed with the intake manifold was to unplug EGR rail and clean the EGR rail and EGR valve....

I don't remember if my slide hammer ever smacked itself against the IAC or something....

Anyways, prior to touching the idle screw the car would react in the same manner.

PS I turned the idle screw left....wouldn't that open things up a little more?

hmm. yeah return the idle screw back to normal. And give the IAC a clean.

Also if u have any friends with an h22 swap the tps and see if that changes anything. You can rule out stuff for free this way

Ya...i have to find some friend's with H22 engines lol.

I remember when the idle screw was in the previous position the car would react alot more when I disconnected sensors and what not.

I guess I can return the screw back to it's original position and try to mess around with the sensors and what not and see what will happen. I guess I could rule out a faulty sensor if the engine would react to me unplugging connectors.

I really hope it's not the TPS since it's in such awkward position. I hope it's either the MAP or the IAC....

yeah its really not hard at all to replace a tps so I wouldn't worry about it. And yes unplugging sensors is a great way to troubleshoot

I just got ahold of a friend who drives the same year Prelude. He is going to stop by on Thursday and let me take off the IAC and MAP from his car and put it on mine and see if my engine will idle.

Thanks for all the help guys. I will reply with an update on this thread later on when I figure out more about this problem. If you guys remember more info to help me out please don't hesitate to post or e-mail me.

Thank you.
