Default high compression ls/vtec?

im building a ls/vtec, a b18a1 block and oem crank. i got a set of eagle h-beam rods from a buddy of mine. they came outta if his ls/vtec. i want to use those rods and some new pistons. i dont plan on sleeving the a1. i was wanting to use some p73 pistons (JDM type-r). someone told me i would have to do something to the pistons to work. is this true?

you need to modify them to accept floating wrist pins with retainer clips. stock uses press fit pins.

to save time either buy forged pistons to onto the h-beams, or sell the h-beams and buy some OEM LS rods to press the ITR pistons onto

any competent machine shop should be able to do this. but...

i got the stock LS rods, but i think id rather just go with new pistons. any suggestions on a aftermarket piston? oh yeah, i got s2 springs and retainers in the b16 head i plan on using. will the stock valves hold up in this setup?

with forged pistons and stock rods, you then have to modify the pistons to accept a press fit pin. either upgrade both or dont upgrade at all.

i was told before forged pistons and stock sleeves dont work very well together because of the different or same metals rubbing against each other and were recommended that if someone were to get forged pistons that they should sleeve the block as well. correct me if im wrong?

Forged piston is fine with OEM sleeves. Plenty of people making 400+whp on stock sleeves.

I'd just get some forged piston if i were you since you already have forged rods. But if you want to use CTR pistons. You're going to have to take the rods and pistons to a machine shop and get some machine work done.

i just wanted to chirp in here real quick...i've been reading up on my stuff, and want to see if i remember correctly.

i've been hearing that CTR pistons are NOT really that reliable/good. is this true?

They seem to do well in the Civic Type R.

You have to match the piston to the application. If your building an LSVTEC and want to be streetable, the compression numbers with the CTR pistons might not be what you want, maybe P30's would be a better choice.

that only applies to the h22

ctr's are heavy and have a huge dome giving you a really high cr for a street application. you can get around it but why not go with less compression from p30's or p73's and make more power?

i got low comp wisecos in my c5, with eagle rods. i like how i was able to put them together myself. i'll probably get some high comp wisecos for the ls/vtec. recommend a compression?

correct me if i'm wrong...isn't a 'high compression', NOT what you want...? especially with turbo applications?

the lower compression you have, the more 'boost' you can fit...right? and isn't more boost better?

i know these are rookie questions, but i'm learning.

not by much, my 12:1 LSvtec ran fine on 91 octane without a tune on a stock GSR map at factory timing spec before I got it tuned

best thing to do is to get it to a tuner as soon as possible they may need to retard the timing a little bit but not too much

i'm sorry. i must not know what LS/VTEC stands for then. i just assumed that there was a turbo present in the discussion.

so then...if there is no turbo present, then high compression is a good thing?

once again, i'm sorry for the novice questions. i'm not trying to waste anyones time.

If you're trying to make power all motor, then yea high compression is a good thing..LS-VTEC can be a boosted or all motor application, it's just utilizing the r/s ratio of the ls bottom end with a free flowing VTEC head

good...what i just went and learned, matches with what you just said perfectly!

i'm gonna go learn about some more tuning now.
