just went to smog...and HC (hydrocarbon) is a lil high off by couple digits... failed twice.....what can i do to lower the numbers ? is it that my cat needs to be replace or timing...or fuel ? help me out.........got ticket for modified intake now have to go to state ref

How old is your cat? My car passed exactly on the money with the cat warmed up.. If I let the cat cool for 10-15 minutes before testing it would fail.. YOu mjight just need to borrow a fresher cat...

How is everything else with the motor running? How is the comopression and vacuum? When was the last time you did a tuneup?

If you were running it modified you may have burned up your cat already...

 

motor runs fine...just did tune up and it has about 210,000 miles ..is it time for a new cat......

 

Post a copy of your smog. Did you fail anything else? What mph did you fail your nox?

Timing can effect your nox, and your a/f too. If your lean nox will go up.

When I went to ref my car, I failed the 15 mph nox by a little. The inspector was col, and ran my car for a little bit to warm the car up more. It passed the second time he ran my car.

Edit: reading owns me. I reread the original post, its your hc that you failed. But try to post up numbers. Having the cat really hot should bring down the numbers down a little still

i just tried to smog my car and got high hc also
at 15 mph max is 92....my car 333
at 25 mph max is 59 ... my car 147

 

whens the last time you change the plugs, wires, cap, rotor?

 

about to do all that on monday and get it re smogged and see if that helps ran some seafoam and that guaranteed to pass stuff.

 

Check timing also u could be running a little rich....
