ls vtec compatibility
hello everyone
a friend of mine has an ls vtec engine setup. it is a b18a1 block with a 1999 civic pr3 head.
i've got a 94 integra with a b18b1. i wanted to know if his setup would fit right in even though it doesnt have the same block. It has the 1999 sir pistons in it and i would need to replace the rod bearings. it has ajustable cam gears.
he is asking 1000 for the engine without tranny.
i also wanted to know if it would be possible for me to keep my stock wiring and just use a push button for the vetec solenoid. because he doesnt have the wiring harness
good deal?
thanks
jeff

offer him less than that since you'll have to do some work on it and you still need a tranny

that's just stupid. do it right or dont do it at all.

Push button or msd rpm window switch to control the vtec?
Like the guy posted above.. just wire it in correctly and save yourself the hassle of the window switch. I had some techs do it on my car as I'm not a wiring guy but I'm sure if you searched the various threads on it (or possibly on g2ic?) you can find a diagram for how to do the wiring. Good luck.

i've got mitchell on demand 2006 (a automotive technician program) so there is no problem for doing the wiring...i just wanted to add the button because i could use my stock computer. i know that it is recommend to use the knock sensor when you do the swap, but for now, if i could use my stock wiring harness, i would not hook it up because i dont really need it for now( its pretty icy up here in canada so i cant really beat the engine for now). i just wanted to fit the engine in, and afterwards, try and get a deal for the wiring harness and a computer for a b18c.
how ever, i just wanted to make sure that i can fit my transmission on his block since he has the sir pistons matched with his block. Other wise, i would install his ls vtec setup on my origional block with the my stock b18b pistons
i'm a mechanic up here in quebec and i do all my mechanics myself.

it's not as simple as vtec crossing over and that's it. when vtec crosses over they ecu switches to different fuel and timing maps as well. if you just used a button to engage vtec the engine will still be running off the maps that dont provide enough fuel and wrong timing.
ok, i get that, but does the b18a1 block a direct bolt on to my tranny?
wiring harnesses are pretty cheap on ebay, or i'll get just a gsr ecm and wire the vtec solenoid and knock sensor seperately
thanks

i wanted to know what ecu you would recommend. the stock gsr ecu?
i was thinking about what you were saying about the vtec ecu changing the fuel injection and map settings when the vtec comes on... i beleive that even if you dont use the orginial vtec ecu, il will work because these settings will change anyhow. since the valves open up longer, the vacuum in the intake will drop lower than usual, thus the ecu knows that you are asking for more power...thus increasing the fuel injection aswell...
anyhow, just a thought but isnt it logical?

the ecu will not compensate enough for the increased incoming air. a nonvtec ecu will not provide the proper fuel and timing requirements needed by a vtec engine, as well as have a much lower rev limit than what a vtec engine can use. this is not something you want to cheap out on as it can be the difference between a fine running engine and one that blows up by running lean.

No, it doesnt work that way.
If that was the case, there would be no need to ever use a Vtec ecu.
