Just Lookin for opinions.
Hello everyone! I just recently registered to honda tech although i have been using the information for quite some time. I am the proud owner of a silver 01 civic ex coupe. So far it has a custom intake, and headers. Its also lowered with an ok system. Let me start by saying that i love my d17. It may be a single cam but it either keeps up or beasts most other N/A honda engines, not to mention its reliable as f***. I also have a nitrous kit for the car but I have postponed its installation due to a worn cluth and transmission problems(I didnt say i loved my tranny). Getting to the point, I am about to start a new job making pretty good money so I want to formulate a gameplan before the checks start coming in. Although I love my d17 I also love power and i know my options are limited. I want to swap in a k series but I afraid I might not know what im getting myself into. I know a good bit about engines but Im no expert on swaps. I know the k's are basically a reversed b series so would that present problems in the swap. If anyone has any information on this subject it would be very helpful.
Just to clear a couple things up before you get flamed out...
1. You only have 1 header, you're not running more than one bank of cylinders.
2. The D17 will not beat out most Honda engines in stock trim, because it's either missing hp (in terms of the B-series), or it's no where near the displacement potential (like the K-series).
Now, as far as swaps go, the K-series is relatively simple. But, it's nothing like a B-series, since the two engines share nothing. There's quite a few resources out there, as far as "How-to's" go. Check the FAQ, and use the Search feature in the top-right corner.

Doesnt bother me, Just gotta brush the haters off right.
I dont really undertand what u mean in line one. I think the d17 makes up the power in its ligtweight personally. This is not to say i think the d17 is superior to b series or nothing. I mean what I said it either keeps up or beasts !most na! honda engines. Plus mines not stock. I know intake and headers aint much but the my d17 sure loved it. Trust me ive done my research but thanks anyway for the links. I was looking more for personal experience. Also does anyone know any good speed shops in the South Jersey maybe philly area.

the d17 is the shittest engine i have ever run in my life. i don't know why you're glorifying it so much. it is crap. period. the hp is nothing. the tq is almost nonexistant, and mods to it, like your intake and header, will do nothing more than 1-4 hp. few people, if any, will feel such small gains: it's actually all in your mind - the sound from those mods make you think you've gained like 10+ hp, the point where increases are actually felt... seriously, go read up on the k20 and k23. they have potential
and good for you that you "love" your civic so dearly.

Sorry to burst ur bubble, but i/h have been proven to LOWER midrange power on the d17, and only SLIGHTLY ( 2-3WHP) increase the top end. They DO however import throttle response, which is what u might be feeling.
Also, the d17 is IMO one of the WORST HONDA ENGINES EVER MADE. why u ask?
1) Returnless fuel
2) Plastic IM
3) Brutal response to boltons
it is made to do 2 things, be reliable and be cheap on gas, power is NOT added into the picture.
U stack any d16 against our d17 and with the same bolton's the d16 will 99% of the time respond with better gains.
this engine WILL NEVER beat !most na! honda engines.
have u ever riden in a b16a power hatch? or GSR powered integra? even in stock trim these cars run 15.2's or lower. our cars are in the 16.2+'s? i think even higher than that.
hell i even got my N/A d16a6 in my old 1990 CRX to pull a 15.2 with nothing more than i/h/e and some drag radials, there is NO WAY our cars could pull those rims in near stock trim.
Also, i already posted in ur other thread about returnless, but this is where u need to be careful about ur nitrous.
if it is a dry kit, sell it. This will FOR SURE blow something up, as u CANNOT increase fuel on our cars by a simple fuel pressure regulator.
You NEED!!! a wet kit, and i suggest the ZEX kit, as not only is it wet ( adds fuel VIA a nossle, to compensate for the nitrous) but it also has NUMEROUS safety features.
1) RPM window switch, nitrous will ONLY engage between an RPM limit you choose, therefore if u cannot apply nitrous at a low RPM, and if u miss a shift the nitrous will stop injecting, so u dont send ur RPM's through the roof.
2) WOT ( wide open throttle ) switch. This will ONLY let the nitrous engage when ur foot is on the floor. If u engaged it when u werent at WOT, beware of detination.
I really hope u have done ur research like u said u have, because nitrous isnt to be played with lightly, it can have serious negative effects on an engine if used incorrectly. But if set up right, and used properly it can be amazing.
I think people are getting low 14's ( maybe high 13's now) with a 75 shot.

Well, no offense, but your performance wouldn't reflect being modified. You hardly will get 3-5whp with a header back exhaust setup and a cold air intake. The D17 is one of the weakest responders to bolt-ons. And, you still won't keep up with any Si's or K-powered vehicles, very well.
As far as the help with the K-swap goes, you may want to start with PM'ing xproductionz here on the forum, or emailing him. He's fairly knowledgeable on the subject.

First let me start by addressing awang. The reason im glorifying my d17 so much is because its the engine fate has given me for now. Its not the greatest but its been good to me. I think its obvious your not the only one who feels that way, but you are the only acting like i insulted your mother. Once again, I LOVE MY CIVIC!
I would think anyone in this forum would at least be able to relate. You guys may be right about the hp gains because my car does sound a lot sexier which may have distorted reality. But, if anyone has seen the stock headers on an 01 civic ex its hard to believe it didnt give me a couple ponies. Thanks for the advive on the nitrous Vantage. I actually lucked out because i choose the wet kit before i even knew about the whole fuel setback. Its a edelbrock kit. Its comes ready to do a 40 shot. You think that my engine can handle that.

Oh, I agree, I love my car. But, I'm not blinded by it's coolness to think that the engine is gold. If you're that adament about it, then go for it, bud. It is your car, and you can do what you like.
PS. Just curious, but why did you make a second account this quick? Just so you know, you can only make 5posts a day as a trial member, but that ends quickly.

Damn i think i need to find a d17 forum. Trust me i dont think my engines gold. Those statements were a response to awang thats all. I definitly do however think the d17 is overlooked a little to much. Stock the d17 is the best single cam
. My friend had a little hatchie with a d16. It never had a chance. Anyway, i dont think having a plastic intake manifold is a disadvantage at all unless you plan on boosting. Its helps save weight and lower temps. But i could be wrong.
P.S. Not quickly enough

i'm just facing the reality of things. the d17 is crap. i'm not trying to prove to myself its any better than it is.
also, i'm only sharing my opinion, since your topic does say " Just Lookin for opinions."

I can help ya' out with that one.

But, there's plenty of SOHC's that would definitely lay waste to the D17. Nissan's had quite the handful of SOHC I-6's.

(sigh)Everyone has their weapon of choice. You act like the d17 murdered your family or something. You should read over this entire page. I dont think you see where im coming from. Its not great. I just dont think its the red headed step child everyone claims it is. If you could get every part imaginable for it like you can the b i think more people would give it a chance. Anyway 40 shot stock d17 internals, Realistic?
Yes a 40 shot on your engine will be fine if it is set up correctly.

Did he have a couch in the back? That car is 300lbs lighter and has the same hp essentially. The slight tourqe increase in engines does not make up for 300lbs. His engine must have been either been beat to crap or he's not a good driver. Not saying you're lying and I'm not flaming you, I'm just giving my thoughts on the matter.

No offense takin. I dont know about a couch but defintely an assortment of subs. I forgot to mention it was a non vtec. Doesnt sound like an even match but as you said he is a couple hundred pounds lighter. Honestly i think its the power advantage up top.
Yeah, if he had a non vtec then you had a power advantage, but not much of one. Can you edit your post if you're a trial member? Because you could always add more by editing.
