Next generation Honda motors?
Hi all, I dont use the internet much, and work is pretty consuming. I dont keep updated much with cars, although I try my best, but Im prepping for a swap. I have a 96 civic hatch, and Ive got great responses from HT members with ideas for a all motor w/ nitrous K20A swap or a Turbo K20A2/A3. The thing is, I don't have the money, my budget right now is limited, although in a year or two I will have saved up alot for it. What next generation engine is expected to come from Honda that will potentially replace the K series like it did the B series, or what K series would be great to start off with.

B-series will never be outdated. They will always sell aftermaket parts for them and keep on making new things for them. The same with k-series.

The K series is more reliable than the B series perhaps or its just a matter of opinion? If the K series really is a good update to the b series, then expect the K series to remain fairly unchaged besides differences in liter variants for 15 years or more, since the B series was introduced in 1986 and ended production in 2001.

Yeah, not even the guys that design honda motors know what the next gen is. They are all busy designing and working the kinks out of the Kseries engines. K20 is a great engine. You'll be pleased with either engine setup. B16's I would go boost, b18's you can have a quick N/a or a very fast boost. K series are great for boost or N/a. H series will probably be all motor in a civic as of less room for all the piping for boost. All of this is just my opinion.
All I'm saying is don't expect some new generation of engines in the next few years. B series engines match mostly a certain range of cars, same with K-series.
Do you already have a chassis in mind for the swap?

my 96 civic cx hatchback. I dont want an H22, and I really think a K series would be the best option. The base RSX engine I could get for $2000 with everything. Labor is another story. I wish there was a write up on a K series swap.

k series cost to much right now. just swap in a gsr and you'll be good to go and boost that. i'm still loving the b series right now, so until the price drops, then i'll move over to the k

$2000 ? Where? are you sure it's the whole swap? Or just the block and tranny?
96 cx, b16 will be an easy plug an play motor
K series, I'm not 100% sure but I think the K-series is rather difficult in that chassis.
In an Ek civic (96-00) I would recommend, (if you're planning on spending good money anyway) buying a civic type-r motor with lsd. It's probably the best motor for the chassis. I'll do some research on motor mounts for the k-series swap though.

I don't know much about the b17. But I've heard both lines on the b20 vtec. I've heard people having lots of problems with reliability issues on the SUV engine and i've read posts from people about how much they like them.
I've driven an EK hatch with a Gsr motor. It had typical Intake/exhaust/headers + a lighter flywheel. It revved like a motorcycle, engine noise was sweet, and was a blast to drive. The handling remained spectacular and it pulled quickly.
Personally I recommend the b18c1 over any b16 (that's not a civic type-r b16) because of it's tourquiness and it's upper car class engine quality. Remember that it was in a higher price ranged car. The typical b16 has the same torque as a SOHC civic ex.
I like it just because of how it sounds. Less of a weedwhacker sound, more throaty just from the engine.

Re: (ek forever guy)
I guess GSR motor it is. It was either that or a B20 head on a B17, turboed.
Dont want to do that.... that would take away VTEC.... maybe do a B17 head on the B20 block. The K-swap is INSANE in the EK. Just Header, Intake, and Exhaust with a Hondata flash is good for about 200 hp to the wheels. If you arent planning on doing anything for a while, I would save a do the K-swap. They will be everywhere in the junkyards, they are made in both japan and the usa, so given time, there will be plenty of junked cars with good engines to swap. Hasport makes everything you need to do the swap, from the mounts to the wiring harness and all. I think, I know that atleast a few companies make the harness for the ek. You would be hard pressed to get 200 whp out of a FULLY BUILT all motor GSR engine. AND you can get the 6-speed gear box, which is even better. The B will not die tomorrow, but in my opinion the K-swap, in a few years, is going to be the only swap to be competitive. But its all in what you want. The K will be around for quite some time, I dont look for honda to do away with it.

It is going to be sweet. Precision SC61 Turbo, RC injectors, KPro, and some other goodies. So I've already set goals, and got a full parts list setup. So it's in the works.
I'm am shooting for 500-600 WHP for a daily driver, regular track EM2 coupe. So, I'll keep you guys updated. And it WILL silence all the haters.

They dont really have a way for the B series, or anything other than a K for my car. There is only 1 maybe 2 documented B series EM2's that I know of. And one of them was the AEM Bonneville saltflat racer.......
So it's really not an option.
Most of that cars stuff was ALL special fab, with nothing comercially available.
