Default So I took the Head off my LS....(pics)

Orginal Thread here - http://www.tamparacing.com/for....html

Little update - I'm getting the head resurfaced today for $35 and they told me with a valve job I'll be looking at $225 total....is that a good price and do I really need a Valve job?

So after all damn day with all the stupid little problems I ran into, (Hey it's my first time doing something this big leave me alone) I finally get the Head off. Now since this is my first time working with things like this, I'm posting up some pics so yall can help me to see what's good and what's not. I know some of the things but I don't know EXACTLY what to look for. Also, I'm going to be taking the head tomorrow to get it resurfaced. Anyways time for pics:

Cyl #3 valves look like they have some carbon buildup....check your injectors (it would be a good time to clean them anyways)

Thanks for the advice you all, I'll make sure they check that all out, and the Valve isn't chipped....at least not that I noticed......damn I gotta look at it again, sorry for the pics I only had a camera phone on me at the time, maybe I can take better pics later.

Bump, I'm mainly just curious if I need a valve job done, I know the shop will let me know but sometimes shops can lie just to get the money :/...and I don't know exactly what to look for to tell if I need one.

Well I'm picking up my head around 12PM, they said I don't need a valve job done so I'm good on that. A question though, my car has 195K on it and the engine was rebuilt at about 135K. I was running 20-50 oil.....should I use something lower like 10-30 or should I stay the same????

Damn, for only having 60K miles after a rebuild, that's a bunch of carbon deposits. I wonder, did you see any smoke coming out of your tail pipe at all? During the previous rebuild, were the vavle seals replaced? Since the shop has your head already, you should have let them replace the valve seals anyway.

As far as costs, my local NAPA/Stradleys machine shop cleaned, pressure tested, replaced SS valves (I supplied), new valve seals, and did a valve job for $225 (they supplied valve seals).

to tell if you need a new valve job we need to see the valve seats and even then they could be out of round which we couldnt tell just from a picture . Take it to a machine shop and have them take a look for you .
