how to do timing without mark on crackshaft?!
To start off ill let u in on the specs of the car...its a 89 Civic Si with the d16a6 in it...now the timing has to be off...the motor is getting fuel and spark and air...it ran before but was off a little bit on timing. I didnt want to drive the car with the timing being off because it was fouling my plugs like crazy. I went today to do the timing and i did what my Chilton told me to. I set the head to where the chilton said was TDC and then i looked on the crank. There is no mark for TDC. How should i go about setting my timing? Anyone have any idea what i can do? To get it to run the first time i set a long extension in the number one cylinder (without the plug) and then spun the crank till the extension was at its highest point...was i close? please guys help i need to get this car running right. Thanx
there should be some marks on it. yeah you can find tdc with an extension like you described. also pull off the distributor cap and make sure the rotor is pointing at the #1 cylinder.
your crank pulley should have 4 marks. 3 of the marks are close toghther and the 4th is about 1" from the 3... thats your TDC mark. this has to be in line with the pointer on the timing belt cover..
u dont put your engine at TDC by looking at the cam pulleys.
you set the crank to TDC, then remove timing belt and set the pulleys with the UP marks.
good luck
