he definitely needs a valve adjustment. but the knocking in increments is weird. i've had some pretty loud tapping valves, but never knocking.

when you say click you mean the increments, right? are you sure it's coming from the motor. you sure it's not the a/c compressor.

I second that.
Find out where it's coming from, block, head, whatever. It might be an accessory like the AC comp.
Also, check the timing :-\.

Other possibilities (but not what I'd look into first) are fuel injectors and/or rotor/cap/plugs/wires.

i think you guys are right about it being the a/c compressor. i didn't think of that until i figured the clicking stops when a/c is off. i will double check and get back to you guys. thanks for helping out. you guys are very helpful.
