Besides for the scratching, screeching noise inside the unit itself, mine seemed to just kick the bucket one day.

 

The distibutor has a bearing and sensors that can fail. But usually, the components inside fail that can easily be replaced. The coil and ignitor/module can be tested and replaced. And the cap and rotor can be visually inspected.

If you have a weak or no-spark issue, test the internal componets. If you are noticing a noise/squeel, pull the cap and inspect the rotor. Is the rotor loose? That could cause the noise.

A bad dist. bearing will cause the rotor to spin off balance and sometimes will eat up the contact points on the cap and rotor. Good luck pinpointing your problem.
