Transmission Swap
Hey everyone, this is just kind of a wild question. I'm thinking I want to get a manual transmission for my 96 Accord. The autos are a little slow. What kind of work and money are we talking about if I were to swap an automatic for a manual transmission? I don't know much about Manual transmissions (or automatics for that matter) but I do know you need a **** lever, a good emergency brake, and a clutch. But as far as like clutch cylinders and stuff? Thanks for the help!
Around here they do NISSAN 5 speed swaps all day long. You need the tranny, clutch kit and flywheel, clutch / brake pedal assy, clutch master cylinder / slave cylinder with lines and hoses, gear shifter and linkages, adapt your wire harness for the Neutral safety switch and reverse lights, you may need to add or change the input shaft bushing (bearing) in the back end of the crankshaft.
I do not know if you would have to change the ECM or not, these Nissans do not, so maybe someone else will chime in on this. Toyota's do not put pre-positioned holes in the firewall to facilitate the swap, I also do not know if you will have to cut your own holes on the Honda.
I love this site but nobody around my area does much with Honda's, sorry couldn't be of more help, do a search on the other forums on H-T.

Hey I appreciate the help. I have a 4 cylinder. F22B, supposedly it's a pretty peppy engine when coupled with a manual transmission. Although my auto has a lot more torque at higher RPMs and speeds.

WTF? on your supra mk4 with getrag maybe?
duane scored a close hit, you need the manual ecm, int. shaft for the manual, i think one side of the shaft is different also. there is not plug and play reverse light for accord

I'm pretty sure tranny will bolt up and the firewall should have holes prelocated where you'll need them.

So all I have to do is get all the stuff and rewire some of the reverse lights and stuff? And I'll be good? No fabrication necessary, everything should just bolt into place?

Wiring is the only "difficult" part of the swap. Pick up a electrical troubleshooting manual and get to work

You should only need to extend some wires, your auto tranny has reverse wires and park / neutral safety wires, you just need to splice them into the manual tranny or maybe put the neutral wires to the clutch switch if your new setup has one. Is there no archives in the search section on a 5 speed swap????? Your PRNDL switches may have been in the car at the gear selector handle, you will need to know which wires to run to their new location for backup lights. It wont matter if they go on + and - OR - and +, they are only making a closed circuit when the switch is made (closed).
On the Nissans they do not run neutral wires, they just tie the two wires together right at the connector near the fuse box so the Inhibitor relay (for the starter) always has power, it thinks its always in neutral, not safe, YES.

wiring is easy. set the PRND234 switch to park then tuck it deep in the console. then just wire up the reverse light switch and the clutch switch if you want to.

Hey thanks everyone. Anybody know how much all the stuff I would need would cost? Anybody ever done this before? Thanks to the poster above me, that's an awesome step by step! You should publish that or something.
