Grind going into Reverse
hey guys,
well i have a little problem that i dont think should happen in any manual car, especially a new one. my car is a week old.
few examples:
1. i had to unload stuff from my trunk and thought it would be wise to reverse up my driveway. i pass my driveway, slowing down to about 5mph and only gettin even slower and proceed into reverse. with the clutch all the way down, i gently try for reverse, then....grind* (note: i was still going 2 mph at the exact time i tried for reverse)
2. i was on my way to eat. in a bit of a hurry so i thought i'd release the ebrake and roll down a few feet while giving me time to put on my seatbelt. the seat belt clicks on and i try for reverse. with the clutch all the way down, i throw right then down.....then....grind*
3. realizing my recent problem, i decide to test it a bit. i'm at one end of my street, at a full stop. i shift into reverse and drive. i hit about 7 mph in reverse, and then shifting into neutral. still rolling at about 6-7, i try for reverse again...and yet again, clutch all the way down...grind*
i have no problems going to reverse to 1st. only when going from neutral to reverse while rolling in any direction
any one else experience this problem in their Si or base model. i have an LX. would you recommend me taking it to the dealer and have them take a look at it? any input would be greatly apprieciated
thank you.

ive done it many times in other 5 speeds. the shift was flawless in either first or reverse rolling anywhere from 2-8. just thought it would be abnormal in a new car. i know not everyone comes to a complete stop before going into reverse

1) The Si isn't a 5 speed.
2) Just be thankful it's an othrwise tight gearbox, though sometimes it is a little bit of a chore to shift it into 6th ...
Bottom line, don't do reverse while moving (and I know exactly what you mean). [shrug]

im well aware that the Si is a 6 speed.
a tight gearbox should explain my situation, and that maybe after thousands of miles on the car it will ease up a bit.

i guess ill have to change up my habbits.
thanks alot guys for your help.

i dont think after a few miles it should ease up? i thought most cars did this a bit- even the manual says "when shifting into reverse make sure your car is at a complete stop before"...ok i was really bored one day. But yeah- just make a complete stop before throwing it in R, not that bad.

I complained about this when I first had the problem. It does NOT like to go into reverse if your car is moving at all in either direction. Mine will however go into first no prob if im rolling backwards slowly...
i think its normal, i know my subaru would grind, and i learned with that that manual trannys best bet is to come to a stop, after all reverse is a non syncro gear, i now in the subaru tranny, i think the honda 5 speed and maybe 6 speed have an ideler gear that moves into place when u go into reverse and thats what u are grinding.
and first gear u dont have to come to a stop, u need to "double clutch"(i know everyone is thinking fast and furious now) but what i mean is you need to get the input shaft to spin at the same speed as the "output" is, and the best way to do that is to double clutch, but your best bet anyway is just to start in 2nd anyway. (learned that with subaru aswell)

There are no synchro's on the reverse gear. That's why you must be completely stopped before shifting into reverse. You can also stick it into first and then into reverse when completely stopped to help get it into gear.
hey i feel ur pain bro that happens to me a couple of times but after a while u learn that its better to just drop down to 0mph before putting it into reverse or first.

i too, notice a whine when on the throttle in reverse. not just in my car but also in a friends 97 teg. i believe its normal
to everyone else:
gotta stop completely before shifting into reverse. Got it
thanks again
