i changed my differential yesterday and put the tranny back together,,,,,now when i drive the car there is a loud whinning noise in every gear.....my budy and i forgot to put that snap ring back on....cause this be making that noise?....is there any wa to put it back in place without having to take the tranny off?

 

are you talking about the c-clip for the countershaft? i don't see how it would even go back together if you forgot that...are you sure that you don't have a bad input shaft bearing or something? when does the whining noise happen...chances are if you cleaned the case out with brake cleaner and sprayed the bearings out you might have ruined them.

 

the snap ring that holds the countershaft its on the housing... bearing werent sprayed or anything like that....if i take off the bolt from the housing i can see the snap ring not in place

 

Uhhhh yeah...that's most likely the problem. The snap ring is an essential part of the transmission.

 

is it possible to snap it on without having to take off the tranny?

You could *try* hitting it on the outside really hard with a hammer. You could theoretically take the tranny off and drop it on the ground (clutch housing facing up) and it should snap into place.

that will only work if he has the snap ring spread around the lip of the bearing.


the noise is probably countershaft 1st gear hitting the final drive ring gear on the diff, hopefully it's not the bearings.


you can TRY to take the cap off, get your snap ring pliers (or flatheads) to spread the clip and then somehow pull on the NUT, not the bearing to get it to lock into place.

of if you want to get REAL technical, you can figure out the torsial thrust that the helical gears have. put the car in gear, spread the clip and then turn both wheels and it should "encourage" the countershaft to walk into place. I suggest putting it in 2nd gear. push the wheels forward or reverse, this is going to be a tricky answer, i need to look at some pics

 

pull cap off to get to snap ring, spread c-clip, put it in 2nd gear, turn both wheels in reverse at the same time.


if you cant spread the clip and turn both wheels at once, you may need to put vice grips on the brake caliper hose for the driverside front wheel. and have a buddy hold the brakes to lock the pass side axle.

i guess the snap ring got in place by itself i took the bolt off after driving for a while and it was in place........but the noise is still there

 

I'm sort of curious - how did you even get the tranny halves back together if you didn't seat the snap ring to begin with??

It's been quite awhile since I replaced the ISB in mine, but I sort of remember not being able to get things back together until the snap ring was seated.

 

you can use the bolts that go all the way around to bring the halves together.

 

Woooooooo, I feel your pain man. I replaced my clutch the other day by myself and it took me 4 ******* hours! Removig the tranny is no BITCH!

 

removing it is easy, getting it back on is more difficult

you can fix your trannys snap ring with the tranny in the car. Take the plug off to get to the clip... Take a flathead screw driver and put it Under the nutt.. and try to pry the shaft UP or Toward you.. You should here hear the c ring clip snap and then your all set... its really easy
