Default whinding tranny noise

I did a search and found nothing useful

here's the problem, I just did a tranny swap on my 97 hatch, I swapped to a 92Si tranny, I re-used my throw out bearing since it seemed fine, also cleaned all the parts with brake cleaner and use the proper grease, but now in 1st, and 2nd, and a bit in 3rd, as I accelerate, I get a whining noise, and it increases as the RPM's climb...now I am going to rule out the release bearing since it was fine on my tranny, I am just wondering what else could cause this?? also de-whines as I deccelarate...

just a background history, the tranny has been sitting in my shed for about two years, if that makes a differance, was sealed in a garbage bag, no water or anything got hear it

Thanks.
had to edit, too late, meant brake cleaner

pilot bearing
as you go up in gear there is less stress on it hence less noise.
that would be my first guess then it go on to the main shaft bearing and main out put shaft bearing. Pilot bearing is on the fly wheel and is pressed out

de-whines?
brake fluid or brake cleaner?
Are you sure the noise started when you installed the tranny? What oil did you put in it? (did you put oil in it?)

Its not the pilot bearing, it would do it all the time... besides, I've never seen a pilot bearing make any type of noise at all!

Does the noise sound the same in 1st and 2nd, or does it sound like its faster or higher pitched the higher the gear your in?

Does the noise go away when turning either direction?

Please answer all these questions!

Thanks for your post,

brake cleaner, my mistake it's 4:30 am, very tired..heh

yep the noise started when I installed the tranny, positive, I drove my car there and it was extremely quiet

I put 1.8L (approx) of Manual honda tranny fluid

the noise sounds the same but ya it goes faster as I accelerate, I am going to have to go and make a .wav file with my minidisc and post it....give me 20 minutes i'll be back...

nope the noise does not go away when I turn...still there...i'll double check but I am pretty sure it stays..

I am going to go make this into a .wav file...brb

Without accelerating, just normal driving is it there?

Same question one more time a little clearer... while going the same speed in 1st gear as in 2nd gear or even 3rd gear, does the noise seem to be any different at all? What I'm trying to figure out is does it have to do with the shaft speeds inside the tranny, or is it in the final drive gears? If at all even in the tranny...

I'm going to bed now, but I will get back with you tomorrow.

yep normal driving, accelerating and deceleration...

I am not sure if this is a coincidance or anything but when I went outside to make the sound files, the noise was non-excistent initially, and as the car got hotter it seem to become more appartant...weird. as for it coming from there, I can't see where else it would come from, I mean I drove the car there, and drive it daily and it's quiet (when I am not punching it...heh)...and we didnt do anything major engine related besides that today....

the sound is not differant dependent on the gear, just on RPM seems like...check out the sound #2 in this zipfile towards the end, seems to be the best one out

here's the link ...

the zip file (which has all 3): http://members.rogers.com/adaccache/sounds.zip

the first one (in case you dont have zip program): http://members.rogers.com/adaccache/sound1.wav
the second one: http://members.rogers.com/adaccache/sound2.wav
the 3rd one: http://members.rogers.com/adaccache/sound3.wav

thanks for everyone's help

Your probably looking at diff bearings or mainshaft bearing. You really won't know until you drop the tranny and look over everything.

One of the two bearings in the clutch housing is bad, sounds like input shaft bearing.

Thanks for everyone's reply...is this something I should be worrying about or can I let it be for some time (say 6-7 months)...I am basically waiting for my clutch to go, hoping I can do it all at once instead of having to rip off that tranny two times, it was a pain to do last night...

Thanks again!

It could be a bad input shaft bearing or release bearing. When you're accelerating and hold the clutch slightly (so it slips, yet puts tension on the bearing) does the noise change? Does it whine in neutral at idle, then whines at a higher pitch as you rev?

The best way to see if it is the input shaft bearing is by pushing the clutch in and see if the noise goes away.

yep thats what happened to mine and I had the same symptoms. It was only audible in 1st and 2nd gear and when I pushed in the clutch it went away.
A tranny rebuild shop said "input shaft bearing" but i just swapped in a new tranny instead of fixing it

yep it does go away if I put the clutch in

but how long will the tranny 'last' with this being in need of changed? I just want to know if I can wait out until the tranny starts slipping

I think what it is, is your throwout bearing. Its a sealed bearing and your not supposed to use and type of brake cleaner or degreaser on it as that will break down any grease inside of the bearing.

just a question quick...
does it only make that noice when your giviing it a certain amount of throttle? (like, once the noise starts, can u keep it going? and when you give it more or less gas it stops?) or can you hear it no matter how much gas your giving it through out the gear?

that noise sounds familiar..
(sorry if the question doesnt make sence..)

your question does make sence...

it seems like it begins in 1st and 2nd at around 2500, not below that

and yes the sound does come and go depending on the throttle input it seems, or maybe my AEM is just really loud

we used the cleaner, then dryed it off, and then put the grease on it, we just wanted a clean surface since it had been sitting for a while
