Screeching of tyres while cornering at low speeds (part two)
Hi,
Posted a topic a while back about my 1994 civic sir screaching when goign round corners at low speeds.
To cut a long story short;
Tyre pressures are bang on
Tracking has been aligned
Suspension seems fine
Tyres aretop of the range- plenty of tread.
The problem is still occuring, but now I feel it may have something to do with the braking sytem? The reason is that when the brakes are heavily used for a period of time, the tracking and the steering wheel go bang on centre. The screeching round corners at low speeds then stops.
When the brakes arent used harshly for a while I will be driving in a straight line with the steering wheel at a 45 degree angle! The screeching of the wheels comes back and the front offside wheel will lock up before any other wheel.
I really need some insight into what this maybe, I hazard a guess at possibly a sticking caliper. But I am not very knowldegeable in this area and am therefore seeking your expertise.
Greatly looking forward to any suggestions or advice, thanks in advance...

Bump... I have also noticed the car is pulling to one side slightly under harsh breaking. I t feels like prehaps the offside front break comes on before the others?
when you say "screeching of tires" do you mean your tires spin when you turn? or do you mean theres is a screeching noise coming from the tire area when you turn?
I mean the kind of noise you get when you are going round corners at maixmum speeds possible, just before you would slide out. I am getting that kind of tyre screeching at VERY low speeds round corners.
I hope this clarifies what i'm talking about?

is the noise coming from the tires themselves spining on the ground or is it coming from something in the wheel well, like the axles or brakes?
why dont you just take your car to a shop and have them check it out, if your outer tire(the tire on the oposite side of the direction your turning in) is spinning and chirping then that sounds alot like a differential problem, altought ive never heard of that happening before, thats just a guess, either way you need to take your car to a shop and have it checked out

VTEC-LUDE, it definitely sounds like there is an issue with your braking system, and I would make it a priority to either service the brakes yourself or to take the vehicle to be checked out if you're not comfortable performing the work.

Its definately coming from the tyres/tires themselves. I'm not sure if i've over complicated matters. Heres a summary of the problem
*Car pulls to the right
*Front right (offside) wheel locks up before any other wheel
*Car pulls noticeably to the right when braking
*Screeching of tyres when cornering, at low speeds.
*when driving in a straight line the steering wheel is at a 45 degree angle
Things you should know
*tracking has been aligned
*tyres are all good
*tyre pressures are sound
I would take it to a garage and have them look at it, but I can't afford to do so. I also find it satisfying to undertake the work myself.. trouble is, I've no idea what this could be? Surely something to do with that front offside brake?

I remember reading your first post about this. With this new info it sounds a lot like you have a brake problem. Here is a quick test jack the car up and put it on jack stands take the front wheels off. Inspect the rotors and brake. look for thinner pads on the right side, discolored rotor (purple or blue hue to it or even rusted). If you see any of this its time to overhaul the brake system.
THanks instructor.. I am going to do what you suggested this weekend. I will report back with my findings. A quick check did reveal the brake pad on one side to be lower than the other though. But I will fully investigate at the weekend and let you guys know.
Just out of interest, do you thing all the problems with the car are directly attributeable to the brakes? Or do you feel there is another issue besides that?
Thanks once again,
Mike.

I think there is a very good chance that getting the brakes functioning properly will eliminate the issues you're experiencing.
I remember i had a 89 Chevy Blazer, when i hit the brakes it would shake and go to one side,
Turned out to be a bad caliper, and a leaking Brake Line, causing the caliper to close and open little bits and making one side shake...
