Default Best way to remove surface rust from my hood?

My hood is fully rusted on the surface. I tried sanding the **** out of it but it doesnt get it evenly at all, and its almost impossible to get the rust from around the raised parts of the hood

Whats the best way to remove the rust.

if its that bad you might have to sand blast it.

its just surface rust. and its coming off. but sand paper does not evenly remove rust.

i am going to buy a drill attatchment...would a sandpaper wheel or a wirebrush work best?

its weird, i found that finer grit sandpaper on a palm orbital sander worked better than rougher sandpaper to remove rust.

Use a die grinder with a Roloc.

Although i wouldnt use that for this. What you should get is some nice 180-200grit sand paper and a palm sander and go to town if its only surface, if its worse then youll need something stronger.

Yes, that is exactly whta i used. With my drill. And it got most of the rust off. But its deeper in some places, so should i just prime over it with a certain primer? I dont want it to come back.

A motorized sanding unit would help a lot, the grinder should do the trick, there are lots of different wheels out there. go to your local hardwear store and see what they have avilable. just take your time and if its only surface rust like you said then a corse sandpaper like a 100grit or even 220 would do the trick. good luck

go to your local car shop and the should sell car paints. a lot of times they sell primer specific for cars. there are some primers that help stop rust from coming back, but your just going to have to look around. there are a great number of primers out there that would do the trick.

If you have a local paintshop i sugest you go and see what they use and if they have some for sale, that would be your best bet. and im sure they will answer any questions you have for them. good luck.

if its just surface rust and youre going to paint it anyways, why dont you just primer it with some POR15 (paint over rust) or something of that sort and sand that smooth?

My cousin, who does body work, did some on a piece of sheet metal with some surface rust on it, waited a week and took the paint off and it had taken off all the rust. plus it keeps it from happening again.

Edit: I know a lot of muscle car guys that do this under their cars.
