Default What is the best method to remove surface rust from metal?

Hi all!

I just bought a used hitch, but it has alot of surface rust on it. Whats the best/most cost effective way to clean off all the rust?
I was thinking of sand-blasting. Anyone have any idea how much it might cost?

What other methods do you guys suggest? What type of paint should I spray it with when I am finished to prevent it from rusting again?

Sandblasting would be the easiest thing to do. Then just paint it with your ordinary black spraypaint and you should be fine for quite a while.

Sand blasting that will take about 10min. & it will be done to perfection, if you use a wire wheel, you could spend hours on it if it's pitted at all.

I run a powder coating shop out of my garage & i did something like that for someone b4, blasting costed them 20 bucks & powder coated it for 50. I'm sure you could find someone local to you to blast it for you & then you could just paint it if you wanted.

sand blasting for 20 buck!?!?

you'll be dumb not to go with this route..

you can use pure acetone or alcohol to clean the metal..

thats what i would charge but thats about going rate. I primarily do powder coating but i offer the blasting service to those that are unable to prep their own materials.

media blasting it will take it right down to metal

If you have a electric angle grinder or an air angle grinder, get some of those 3M pads, grind it all off

there was alot of surface rush on a lift at work, and i just grinded it all off with that... easiest

a small sand blaster. It will pay off in the long run if you buy one. I used mine once a month.
