car smoking..
I just wanted to see what some of you guys thought of my little issue. i have a gsr swap in my 95 civic and am just about ready to boost it. however, it burns about a quart of oil a week and smokes under normal driving conditions and especially in vtec. Do you think its the bottom end? or just valve stem seals? do you think i should just rebuild the motor or just the head.....im unsure.
unless the valve stem seals are really gone. It is prob. the piston rings. Valve seals being bad you will see more oil smoke at start up. and not so much when you are driving. bad rings however will cause oil burning all the time. Do a compression test and a leak down test and see how the numbers look
join the club my man.. i burn a quart a week as well in my b16.. i have all me rebuild stuff in my closet.. pistons.. rods.. head studs.. blah blah blah.. but ya im guessing its probably your piston rings.. or your valve seals.. if your goign to go turbo i would suggest building your block head and bottom end.. better to be safe than sorry.. thats just my way of thinking

so, you are saying your motor, that you are just about ready to "boost" burns about a quart a week under normal driving.
(which normal driving is rather different person to person)
and you have no idea what is causing it.
Do a compression check first.

so heres the deal with the compression test,
#1) 210
#2) 183
#3) 180
#4) 190
the leakdown test was pretty good all across the board with minimal leakage or LOW as the guage said. i forgot the percentage but it held pretty well.
So, i still got smoke....it seems to smoke in vtec and maybe just a little i mean a little under normal driving conditions. My only other ideas were maybe PCV being shot and its suckin some oil up to the intake manifold as there is a very little bit of residue on the nipple the hose attaches to or valve stem seals is the other thought.....what would be your guys' guess?
oh and another thing. #3 and #4 plugs looked great but #1 and #2 are running lean??? vacuum leak maybe? injectors? thats where i sit as of now.....

damm i have the same damm problem as you... only in vtec, clouds of smoke arise from the tailpipe.. piston rings sure shot.. have a cusco catch can and dunno how to dump it or whatever... ANYone have any suggestions??? oil all in the tube to the intake... if only i knew how to empty the catch can every week or so i think i wouldn't be sucking so much oil into the intake manifold.. ANYONE any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

The problem I see is the difference across the board 30psi diff from your high and your low reading. Did you do your test with the engine warm, all the plugs out, wide open throttle, and I like to have a batt charger hooked up to keep things well charged.If so I would start looking into some other problems with the engine. It is also not uncommon for the car to use oil when in vtec.

the car was warm when the i did the compression test however i didnt hold the throttle wide open....i thought thats what you had to do but the guy helping me out said i didnt....guess i should of done it anyway. i have a pcv on order since noone, not even the dealer has it in stock. ill see what that does as well. The car still pulls really really well too thats what kinda confuses me. I think ill just get some studs, head gasket, have the head checked and boost it til she blows...then ill rebuild. lol
