170,160,122,153

this is so bad, how can i tell where the loss is coming from, i.e. if its bent valves, head gasket or rings

Well you could try the old way of putting a teaspoon of oil into the cylinder and running the test again. If the compression comes up, the rings would be suspect.

When you did the compression test, was the motor fairly warm and did you hold the throttle open?

Those will change the readings.

considering 180-215 or so with no more than a 5-10 loss in between is normal !

then,OUCH !

adding oil will make ANY readings higher doesnt matter if the motor is good or bad.

To do a Leakdown Test you need a Leak Down tester (about $80-Longacre has a nice one) and a source of compressed air. The concept is to pressurize each cylinder at top dead center with the compressed air (usually 100 psi) and the leakdown tester will give you the 'rate' at which the compressed air is leaking out of the cylinder.

Then by listening at exhaust tip, intake, crankcase and by checking for bubbles in the cooling system you can make an educated guess as to where the leakage is occurring.

SGT- my experience has been that putting a little oil in a cylinder with a low compression test reading, and re-testing should help differentiate between bad rings vs. bad valves. If the reading comes up substantially it would point to rings, if it only comes up a little its the valves. If nothing changes its a hole in the piston<LOL>.

Yup, not much help beyond that.
