Default Timing Advancment...

Has anyone here advanced the timing of ther R? i heard you can get more HP to the wheels by doing so... How many Degrees should i advance it safley to achieve a noticable gain in HP? Is it even worth it?

I've gained nothing by advancing the Timing on my ITR. I kept trying to get that extra hp at the dyno, but couldn't extract any through timing.

I know that on my DA autox car i kept advancing the timing while at the dyno and it stopped making power at 23 degrees TDC. But that was a LS motor.

Try it for yourself, just do it at the dyno instead of using something stupid like your butt to tell you if it makes more power.

Best advice. It's in the FAQ.

Yes, you can get a couple of HP by advancing the spark. It's also power that you'll feel at lower RPM, which is always good. Make sure you know what you're doing, though. You don't want to add knock.

You can also get stuck in a little tuning loop.

E.g., put 100 octane unleaded in your car.

Advance the spark to take advantage.

Ooops, it's too lean.

Add fuel.

Wow, that means we can advance the spark again.

Ooooops. Too lean again.

I can't speak from experience with real data, so I will say that up front and tell you what I do know.

I have run with maximum advance limited by the distributor travel, which equates to about 23 BTDC. This is on a stock engine.

1. You can/will get knock under light throttle conditions in hot weather, particularly with A/C on (not a good thing)
2. You will notice your shifting - particularly 1st and 2nd becoming much smoother, requiring less clutch modulation (very good thing)
3. You will notice (if you're paying attention) the engine will pull VERY smoothly from low rpm in all, but particularly in the higher gears with little to no bucking (very good thing)
4. You will notice (if you're paying attention) there IS more low end torque available at WOT condition (yell at me if you want on this, but I know this to be fact despite not having dyno curve to show you !!!) (very good thing)
5. WARNING (following is not data based) - I suspect there may be a slight loss of top end power at this setting because the exhaust can smell quite rich at times (potentially not such a good thing)

Also of note - these 'effects' can diappear during periods of high ambient temperature and high humidity...

I played around with an adjustable timing light one night and tried several different settings, each time taking the car out for a drive. 17.5degrees advanced is where it felt the best all round for me (butt dyno) , so thats where i left it.
