what are you running for spark plug wires, plugs (heat range too) cap and rotor?
what engine is this on?
i've not heard of this probelm before but more details and maybe i could come up with something.

sorry, i should clarify some more.

the first and second time it died with OEM/new dizzy was with the (pretty) bad ground wire.
i've installed the 4ag ground "kit" now, but am hesitant to put on the repaired dizzy at the moment.

this is for a d16z6, 95 civic ex.

i forget what the plugs are, but i got them at autozone, 1 prong ngk's. they should be stock heat.
the whole dizzy assembly is new.
the spark plug wires are still the old OEM ones, i still havent tested them with a multimeter yet.

also, this is the "random google" i'm referring to, but he says it will kill the ignition module rather than the coil.

wires. replace them. if they are old then the coil has to work harder to get spark to travel the wires and to the plugs. but thats all i can think of right now. What about the cap and rotor, they came new with the dizzy you just bought?

you should have a ground point on the transmission, the valve cover/block.

if their is no ground path for the spark to got to when the coil fires it will go to the closest ground it sees which will be the neg. tach pulse. it will short itself out internally. you cannot let your engine run if its misfiring, because everytime it misfire it will short itself inside until its shorted completely and useless.

that actually brings up another issue, but i didnt think it was related. the tach would actually start bouncing at higher rpms, around 6k it would just bounce from 6-7 like crazy.

great, burned another one. This is really bad...
Everywhere on the engine definitely has a good ground direct to battery, the spark plug wires are brand spankin new, spark plugs are new, so basically everything with the ignition is new.
The engine did fine all the way up to 7k, no jumpy rpm, nothing, drove GREAT! Thought it was all good then at a stoplight, BAM, dead. I could smell the burned coil in the engine. I threw a working coil into it and drove it home. This really sucks.
HELP!!!

Can you go back to the stock grounding points with stock gauge wire? It rolled out of the factory with them and lasted a lot longer than your "4-5 random spots of 4awg on the engine".

The tack breaking up is a classic symptom of the ignitor failing.

i grounded the engine in addition to the stock points though.
heres the locations:
all the painted/old areas i sanded down.
-one of the dizzy bolts->front support
-grounding point on the thermostat->battery
-battery->back of IM->fuel rail->front of valve cover (stock location)->front chassis
-the grounding point with the wing nut (in front of the valve cover)->front chassis

it failed with the original dizzy with the stock grounding anyway, thats the whole reason i did the wiring, hoping the ground was the problem.

the problem is the whole thing is new. the grounds, spark plug wires, distributor, spark plugs.
