Okay what do you guys think of my idea. I am convinced that me an my friend can complete my 5 speed swap ourself instead of paying a shop 700-1000 bucks. We have most of the tools excluding a engine hoist. My intent is to remove the engine in 4 pieces. Intake manifold, head, block, and tranny. This will help make the engine lighter but more work on the same note so I am aware of that. Also I was gonna clean up the bay a little. Remove A/C, cruise control, loop the rack and pinion and remove P/S components and relocated the battery to the rear. This car isn't my daily anymore for I am in no major rush to get it back up and running as soon as possible. But I want to inspect my block and head and perhaps change my head gasket, maybe a better intake manifold gasket and do the h23 tenioner conversion. I found a free manual online and I think its the helms. Its not Haynes for sure. Its the 93 prelude manual that has like over 1800 pages. You guys have any pros/cons to this approach.

This is the way to go
.
Working on/inspecting a motor outside the car is a lot easier than in the engine bay hunched over breaking your back trying to reach through small opennings while getting cuts and bruises all over.

oh i wasn't going to inspect it while it is in the car. by any means. i am too tall to be haunched over, lol. well dropping the engine from underneath would be cool but i live in apartments so i can't just slide the engine to a corner and go from there. for all the work i have to do. i estimeate about 3-4 good weekends to accomplish this on my spare time. so thats why breaking it down seemed reasonable.
Do You Live Near A Harbor Frieght tools? if so id suggest Investing in one of there engine hoists, there $119 bucks, i have one and ive pulled almost 80 motors out with it so far
Also Do You have a Welder? Your gonna need it, for welding in a clutch pedal
And welding in the New Shifter Linkage
You have to Get Swap The master and slave cyliners for the clutch, you need the 5 speed ECU.. alot has to be done
And if you dont know what your doing a manual isnt really going to help you

no i don't live near a harbor. i live in dallas. no i don't have a have a welder. from all the write ups i have reviewed within the past year, i haven't seen a welder as part of my list that i need for my swap. i haven't seen anything in the writes that require welding of the shifter or the clutch. i went to the junkyard and was able to pull several shifters w/plates and clutches/gas pedals with just a rachet and and sockets. so i have no clue why you say i need a welder. as far as what your telling me i need, yes i know the list almost like the back of my hand. I studied and collected parts for about a year. and many first time swapers have had success with a feel of satisfaction. i have the helms manual not the haynes so i think the manual will do a bit of good. only advice/suggestion that sounds valid from your point is getting the hoist. I wouldn't jump into this project head first without knowing what I am getting myself into. If all fails I can always get a shop to do it, but at least I tried and learned. but the whole process seem fairly simple, just time consuming and patience is needed. for 1000 just for a this swap i bet anyone would try it for themeselves.

what in the hell are you talking about? there is no welding involved at all, even with the tranny mount. also if his car is obd1 he can unplug the TCU and run with the auto ECU fine.

thanks for the backup raceACCORDingly. he actually had me reviewing a few writes ups to confirm, lol. but one question for you Race. I know the manual will work on the auto ecu since i am shifting myself but will that throw a cel. the old p13 won't be permanent though. i will only use it if i haven't gotten my p72 socketed by then to run my hondata in which I was told by the guy i bought off ebay from that its already h22 ready. and yeah i know i still have to get it tuned for my motor. i just wanna be able to drive it to the tuner and not tow it.
oh and yeah i am obd1. i have the 92-96 h22a.
