Head Gasket
hi i need to change a head gasket on my 90 si was wondering why one it cost so much in labor to get done and number two any tips, I have haynes and it seems straight forward on how to do it but, I know you veterans always have way to time save do a better job so advice would be great
For the first question, it cost so much because it takes a lot of time to get to the head gasket. You have to remove the intake manifold, the exhaust manifold, (depending on the engine) the camshafts, the timing belt. Then they have to remove in head bolts in sequence to prevent the head from warping. It takes time to do this. That explains the cost.
For the second question, I haven't done it often enough to know any shortcuts. Sorry.

there arent really any shortcuts, just follow the directions in your haynes manual. You don't want to be taking any shortcuts when replacing the headgasket, just take your time, keep track of bolts and cam cap locations, follow all torque specs and tightening patterns and you should be good to go.
