Default heat synch when chipping?

do you need to use a heat synch (sp?) when you solder in a chip to a ecu? this is a p28 ecu if it matters, and its a just a diy chip kit running a custom rom.

when u get a piece of metal that attracts the ehat from the solder, so the heat doesnt go into the chip and ruin it.
