A long block usually comes with most of the parts you will need for installing a motor. IE Intake manifold, exhaust manifold, PS pump, AC Compressor, Alternator, starter,

A short block usually comes with a complete block and head.

great -- so there's no actual difference between the two.

so to play it safe - a longblock is everything except the head.

where as a shortblock is only block and head

am i understanding this correctly?

That's just the outside layer of it. A longblock usually comes with all the sensors and ****, but that's not the important part. A shortblock is just the block, in and of itself, no head, but NO TRANNY. A longblock consists of a the block, head, and tranny. Usually there's two kinds of longblocks, a longblock (which is just the engine as an entity in and of itself) and a longblock complete changeover which includes all the sensors, intake manifold, header, throttle body, etc.

I wouldn't recommend a shortblock unless you're doing a completely custom build from the ground up.

I have seeen shortblocks come with a head. It does happen. Just depends on who you get the motor from.

A shortblock with a head techncially isn't a shortblock.

http://www.google.com/search?h...block

See? Even by definition - with tranny or head = non-short block. It becomes "a long block without a head" or "a long block with out a tranny" or "a block and head" or "a block and tranny."

I was gonna say, I always understood it like this:

longblock - block and head together, may or may not come with sensors/harness

shortblock - assembled complete block with internals

swap - block and head, with all sensors/harness's and accessories and trans, ecu and etc

short block is just the bottom 1/2, no transmission, no head.

long block is block and head.(may include sensors, manifolds, and dressings, not always)

complete swap/change over is complete motor, transmission, axles, mounts, you get the idea

I can verify this because I went to the dealer, and wanted to get a new B16a3 for my sol. and they only sold it seperately. shortblock(2500), and head(3200). no transmission(3300)
