Default my car turns off

two days ago my car was running fine. yesterday i turned on the car and the car idled for a little and then just shut off. i tried turning it on again and the same thing, it just shut off. i turned it on for a third time and held the gas lightly and it stayed on. my car stays on as long as i give it gas but as soon as i let off, the rpm just drops to 0 and my car turns off.

does anyone know whats wrong?

FITV- Fast Idle Throttle Valve.

Located under your throttle body...regulates idle based on engine temperature

hmmm...really hard to tell. i had a similar situation. drove the car for alittle bit and was able to get a CEL which helped trouble shoot. it turned out to be my map sensor. might be the same problem (who knows)? how about you take it for a spin just around the neighborhood to see if a CEL will appear, since it took about 5-10 min for mine to appear.

it could be your map sensor.... but when is the last time you checked your fuel pump or fuel filters. you should get them changed regularly. what happens when you need a new fuel pump, the old one does not pump fuel to your engine while in idle, but as soon as u step on the gas it gets force to pump fuel, so get it checked, its in your fuel tank.

alright, i just got home and turned on my car... when i turned on the car, it turned off. i turned it on again and i held the gas lightly for a while then i started to rev for about a minute to warm the engine up. i took the car out and started driving. the CEL didnt show up and the drove fine . i then stopped and my rpm needle dropped to 0 again. i thought my car was off but i then reved the engine and the car was on. the rpm is just really really low.

anyway i could fix this problem?

You said you didnt have the car registered, so Im guessing you bought the car recently. Did you do any maintenance to the car after you bought it? What condition is it in? Mileage? Give us some more info. Tune-up, done recently?

Id check the condition of the plugs, only because that would give you an idea of when the fuel filter was changed. Check the air filter, see if its clogged. The basic stuff before you get into the major stuff.

Just taking a guess, sounds like it could be the fuel pump.

in response to noz, i bought the car on sunday, i got it registered today. tomorrow its going to my mechanic. its in real good condition except for that. the car has 100,000 miles. i havent done a tune up yet. my mechanic is going to check all that tomorrow, but id like to have an idea of what could be wrong. the idle is off. yesterday i drove the car around my neighborhood and the car idled high. when first turning the car on when its cold, thats when it turns off if i dont give it gas.

i gota go to class, ill post more info when i get out.

thanks for your responses

that's what i was thinking at first but since he doen't have any CEL it rules out the map sensor (since having a map sensor unplugged will give you a code 3).

since you're taking the car to the mecahnic, that's probably your best bet, pricey but that's one headache you really don't have to deal with. let us know how everything turns out.

Might also be main relay!! But check map sensor, IACV or fuel filter and pump.
