breaking in motor. synthetic or regular oil?

i have heard it is bad to break in a new motor with synthetic oil. is this true? if so, when is it acceptable to swtich over to synthetic? if anyone can elaborate more on this or branch off of this into other oil discussion feel free to do so.

True. Synthetic is soooo slippery that the rings have difficulty seating. Any low to medium weight dinosaur oil like Castrol or Valvoline will work. Keep the rpm down, but DO use wide open throttle under load to built some cylinder pressure. You can switch over anytime after the rings are seated.

I used non-detergent 30 for the first 20miles (like in the reliable LS/VTEC thread) then used Castrol GTX 5W-30 after that.
IMO synthetic is just not worth it. Stay with regular and save your money.

i was gonna use regular castrol gtx 5w30 in my new motor.
I would use a non detergent 30 weight of some sort for the first few start up and let the motor reach full opperating temp. If you have an OEM factory rebuld without cams ported head injectors etc then you can drive it around on the OEM ecu for 20-30 miles and vary the engine speed. Dont be afraid to open it up a bit and let the car decelerate by itself in gear, youy dont need to go crazy or 120 mph. If you have lots of aftermarket parts then get it to teh dyno ASAP and break it in on there.

Alot of the non-detergent oils are SA or SB rated oils--meaning they are pretty much just filtered oil out of the ground with hardly any additives. There is a local hardwear store around here that carries non-detergent oil (not a major brand) in gallon containers-it is rated SA-- on the label it literally says something like "This oil is rated SA it is not suitable for passenger cars manufactured after 1939"--I had bad luck using Castrol non-detergent. Be careful if you are going to use a ND or better yet use a quality mineral oil like Castrol, Exxon. Also, check out http://www.bobistheoilguy.com the guys on there dissect oil like you wouldn't believe--there are ALOT of differences between oils...
