Default Vtec problems

One of my friends has a 2002 civic si...he bought it used. After he bought it the check engine light came on and it threw the o2 censor code. The guys who had it before him put Crane cams in it and it also has a header cat back exhaust. He has been having problems cause it wont hit vtec, someone told him if he fixes the o2 senor that will solve the problem i no that wont fix it though. I really dont know very much about the i-vtec does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong with it?

I've got the same car, and without mods, it truly isn't that noticeable unless you know when it engages and what it sounds like. It isn't as "abrupt" as their other VTEC systems.
