throw out bearing
I actually want to know this too. So I am testing it. I am going to drop a new motor and tranny in my car and the tranny I have now has a bad throw out bearing so I am just letting it go. Been going for a month so far, it was really bad at first but it has gotten quite as times goes on.

If the thing is grinding i recommend replacing it sometimes when there is just a slight noise and it stops when you push in the pedal it can be like that for years but if your getting grinding replace it.
