If it's a bad ball bearing (such as ISB), if the race deteriorates enough, the ***** can actually fall out and become lodged in the gears. The gears will win, and the tranny is then fuxored.

It depends on how bad it is and which bearing. I have had a casing bearing shatter and been bad for months of driving and nothing happened luckily. But if one of the bearings on the mainshaft crack, shatter, etc it can cause some damage to the transmission. Just spend the $50 and buy the new bearing and replace it

pre-maintenance will save you money in the long run, it would suck to have it go out and do other damage.

I used to have a D16Z6 tranny, and the main shaft bearing went bad. I drove it for over a year without any problems.
It was pretty loud (the lower the gear the louder it was), but it never caused me any problems otherwise. However, it is probably something that you'd still want to take care of

In March of 2003, I started getting bearing noise from my Z6
In June of 2003 I lost 3rd Gear
In October of 2003 I lost 4th Gear
In January of 2004 I lost 5th Gear
Then I drove for 2 months with only 1st and 2nd gear
Then March 2004 I got a new tranny and Z6 motor, because the old one blew a main seal because of all the high rpm's driving in 2nd gear all the time.
So yeah bearing noise can get worse.

a bearing recently went out on a friend's transmission. it punched a huge hole into the transmission housing and it crippled his car for a couple weeks because it was no longer driveable. he heard it making noise for maybe 3 months prior to the failure.
