Default Abrupt Timing Change - CamGear Retarded Itself 10 Degrees!! Easiest Fix? Whyd It Happen?

So I was driving around today on break just wasting time, going maybe 60mph at around 10psi when my car pipe blew

So I was running basically a built d16a6 n/a and it felt like a dam dog, slower than before when I ran it n/a. I go back to work, think nothing of it. Come out after work and it starts up mint, I drive cross town to my girlfriends andFUCK is this car ever feeling slow, when I try and start the car up and leave her house it took about 15 tries with LOTS of gas

I managed to get it but the car would not hold itself alive, had to peddle it the whole way home just coasting in neutral and holding it up to about 2k.

Get out and pop the hood at home, everything seems mint, then I check the timing belt and my AEM adjustable cam gear and ofcourse it has gone from the 2* dvanced where I had it set last week and is now sitting on -8* retarded....

So did my timing belt jump a tooth or did my cam gear slip?

Whats the best and easiest way to prevent this from happening or to find the cause.

The motor only has about 200 miles on it.

the belt had to have slipped... thats pretty crazy...

hopefully nothing more serious happened.

do you run open cam gear (uncovered) ???

on my b16a a rock made me jump time bc i was running with no cam gear cover.

See: http://www.aempower.com/faq.asp?fid=36&sid=&tid=5

Orginally, they where having problems with their fasteners
and I believe they offer free replacements for the older units..
{I have an older one but never installed it on my D16}

Loosen the bolts on the cam gear an rotate the crank bolt
to move the gear to its original position..

Torque the bolts and rotate the engine a couple of rounds
counter-clockwise and recheck the cam timing and see what it looks like..

Yes I do run open cam gear, I didnt want to but I didnt notice until after I got my engine assembled that I forgot the plastic piece that goes behind the cam gear that the cover attaches to

I dont really get how to set the timing back to 0* though

And how to keep it there

How tight do these 3 bolts have to be?

At least 15 lbs/ft.. That is the "specified torque.."

It also says:Do not tighten more that 20 lbs/ft
and once the gear is set where you want to leave it to
use red locktite on the three bolts..

Whatdya know, the ******* bolts were like hand tight
Easy breezy swap

Went out for a test drive, air fuels richened up a whole .8-.9 and as soon as I boosted it my coolant hose popped right off the top of the rad!!
