I HAVE AN 00 SI THAT I HAVE BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH LATLEY, IVE GOT ALMOST EVERYTHING FIXED EXCEPT THIS LITTLE ONE AND I CANT FIGURE OUT WHERE TO START. MY CAR KEEPS THROWING CEL P0172 WHICH IS THE CODE FOR RICH CONDITIONS, BUT MY AIR/FUEL READS THAT ITS ON THE LEAN SIDE OF THE SPECTRUM. ANYONE KNOW HOW TO VERIFY WHICH IS WHICH?

First, turn off your caps lock.

Now, give us a little background. What mods are done to the car? What problems were you having? What type of A/F gauge do you have?

Have you replaced the o2 yet. If the O2 is READING rich, it will lean your car out. And are you running a Wide Band O2?

I havent checked out the o2 since I bought the car a year ago, so it could be that. The a/f is a auto meter. How can I tell if its wideband or not? The car has i/h/e, crower cams, and skunk im....

it sounds like you have a/f guage hooked up to the stock O2, in my IMO this is worthless and it will constantly read rich/lean, in other words you need a wideband O2 for that guage to function properly

Alright, now we're getting somewhere.

First off, you do not have a wideband. An Autometer AF gauge is a narrowband gauge hooked up to the stock O2 sensor. It gives no accurate readings and basically tells you if you are in closed loop or open loop operation. By the way, the gauge cannot be hooked up to a wideband as the previous poster stated.

Though the narrowband AF gauge cannot be used as a tuning tool, it can be used to monitor the stock narrowband operation and can be helpful in determining problems. You said that the gauge shows that it's on the lean side of things, but the ECU is throwing a running rich code. So what does that tell us? That means that the ECU is also seeing a lean condition. Because of this, the ECU is adding fuel to compensate. The problem seems to be that fuel does not need to be added, which in turn is causing the CEL.

I would first replace the O2 sensor and reset the ECU to see if that clears things up.

You said you have cams, intake manifold, and I/H/E, does the car have any engine management? If so take it to a tuner, they may be able to help. They can put a eideband on to see exactly where the AFR is and can go from there. You can also put on a wideband, but if you don't know what to do to fix the problem it's not going to help you that much.

If the car does not have any EM, get some. Good luck.

Yeah, as others have said, ur rich/lean guage doesn't mean **** if u don't have a wideband (5 wire) o2 sensor.. Your o2 sensor could be bad though, if you have a friend with a B16 temporarily swap the O2 sensor and see if it pulls the same crap, you don't need a wideband but if u want ur rich/lean gauge to work right u need it....but functionality over light shows
