Default rebuild b16 tranny or get a gsr tranny?

my tranny is making the car shifter and engine shake left to right. The gears doesn't grind, so i don't think anything wrong with the syncro. So i was wondering is it going to be cheaper to get it rebuilt, or just replace it with a gsr tranny for $450? the b16 tranny is a 99 with only 40k miles. So far i was quoted around $150 for the labor + whatever parts cost. Will parts run under $200 or more than that.

How do you know it's the tranny and not the mounts or something? It could be something as simple as a loose bolt.

Regardless, both options will be close in cost. The B16 tranny is shorter, so I'd stick with that.

i checked the mounts, axles, spindles, hub, tie rods. i replaced the axles. i'm pretty sure it's the tranny cuz when i shift in gear without the axle while the car is jacked up, i hear noise.

I'd go for the rebuild...

but what kinda engine is it on? If you use this for a lot of racing you'd want a shorter gear box so u should stick with the B16, if ur using it as a daily driver I'd go with the GSR, screw the whole rebuild deal :-\

it's a stock 99 b16 engine. i'm not planning on adding any racing components to it. just want it as a daily driver. no racing either. i was considering the gsr tranny because i prefer to drive on the highway more than the streets. but at the same time the b16 tranny was meant to be on the b16 engine.... how much do you guys think i can get for my b16 tranny?

your problem doesn't sound like a tranny situation. sounds like a mount problem.

how do you do this with no axles? so your putting it though the gears without tranny fluid? well then of coarse your going to hear a noise. if anything i bet it's the mount behind the engine causing this.

oh, and if i had a choice between the 2 trannies, i would rebuild the b16, it's a way better tranny, hell i'll even throw in a lsd since i'm going to be in there.

will rebuilding the b16 be the same amount as buying the gsr? i'm on a budget, and my price for the whole thing is $450. are you referring to this mount? if yes, i even reshot it back with an airgun.

also would tranny fluid cause the shifter to shake when driving 20+mph?

no that's your tranny mount. there is a mount behind the intake manifold, under the firewall, mounted to the front subframe.

no the tranny fluid won't do that, but here's a tip, use honda mtf, can't go wrong!

yes right pic, but from the pic you can't tell. when my left upper mount was broken i couldn't tell from one side, not until i took the mount off and inspected, then i saw where it was torn. my mount had 54000 miles on it when it went out.

*edit* they usually go out where the bolt goes through.

also the 2 torque mounts up front. those 3 mounts are your problem i bet.
ps. for a daily driver i would just go with rebuilding the stock tranny and putting in an ls 5th gear.

probably about the same, you said a local shop was charging $150. are they reliable. you don't want someone doing crappy work then just to repair it again.

as for parts check this site out to get some ideas for parts versus prices.

or better yet, you can always call the dealer.
