i was told had to get it welded obviously, so i went to a body shop and they quoted me 500 for it...i left thinking wow.

is that a $500 job or wahts teh best way to get it fixed

yeah you have a subframe tear out. common in our civic's due to the larger rear sway bar. forget welding that, i would order a new subframe (preferably a type r) and have a shop weld that one in. had you had a reinforced subframe, like the ones that come from comptech or asr, that problem would have been avoided.

yikes... thats scary... I have heard of that happening, but never seen it..
damn, I dont know what you should do... basically you will need to fix it, but will a weld actually fix the issue? I would probably consider taking that lower bar off no matter what... that may be part of the problem...
also, $500 doesnt sound out of the question... I mean, damn, the frame is torn...

i found some threads on this subject, figured you might want to look them over, trust me your not the only one.

if your referring to the tie bar, that's not the problem, it's the sway bar w/no reinforcment.

thanks for all the help. Honda told me that the bar really wasn't helping and could have been a cause to to tearing happening faster..the crack has been expanding slightly.

the bar came with the car when i bought it back in aug almost a eyar ago

thanks philosofy1 and ykracing for the replies. ill read the other threads and see whats up and i will report back

anybody have shop reccomendations for michigan?

the dealership is going to say that since your tie bar is aftermarket. the actual cause of this situation is the sway bar. when you take turns the car flexes, the sway bar is made to minimize this. with the sway bar in and the car flexing, it causes stress to the subframe pulling and twisting. being that the 92-00 civic's have weak subframe it tears it either where the lca's bolt to it or at the factory welds.

the subframe is a dealer item. i tried to look for the part number for you, but i got preoccupied. as far as the sway bar, keep it just get a sub frame reinforcer like this one - http://www.comptechusa.com/store/product451.html

they have it for 92-95 civic's and 94-01 integra's (listed these only since they have the same subframe). and 96-00 civic's.

This is very common on the 96-00 chassic. Only saw a tear out on the 92-95 once.

and ye si've seen them more on 96-00, but i've seen a couple on the 92-95's i have a 93 hatch and i rather pay $200 for the support than over $200 for the subframe and a shop to weld it up.

I have a 95 hatch with 23mm rear sway along with ASR reinforcement bar. Good insurance.

considering taht i'm going to have to get the subframe from the dealer...a type R is probably out of the question

so a new subframe, reinforcer from comptech or ASR and then the labor to do it

but now the next question, comptech or ASR?

ASR hands down. Never heard anything bad and I am using one on my em1. Very nice product.
